Experience the silent majesty of the Caribbean rainforest at Holywell Park, a large recreational area in the lush Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park. Escape the heat of the warmest Kingston days by taking a fascinating drive up the hills to enjoy magical views.
The tops of Holywell’s tall trees are hidden in the mysterious fog when clouds are low. The area is richly forested and the cool air is fragranced with the aroma of the iconic Blue Mountain coffee plants. This serene jungle park is a hub for eco-tourism 3,000 feet (900 metres) above sea level. Look for Jamaica’s endemic bird species and beautiful butterflies that thrive in the area.
Select from five different bushwalking trails: Blue Mahoe Trail, Oatley Mountain Trail, Waterfall Trail, Shelter Trail and Wag Water/Dick’s Pond Trail. None of them are treacherous but pay attention to the signs and select the one that suits you. Reserve a campsite or cabin to stay overnight within the park.
If you’ve brought a picnic with you, do some outdoor grilling in the park. Select from ten gazebos to spread out your lunch. This area is lovely for families to spend time together. Find something extra for children at the Kids Discovery Zone in the main picnic area.
This park is good for a daytrip or an overnight stay in one of three rustic cabins. You’ll be able to gaze upon the twinkling city below. You won’t be completely alone here as the park is patrolled by rangers. Remember to pack extra layers, as even when it’s sweaty at sea level, temperatures in the hills can drop at night time.
Holywell has educational packages and guided tours, including specific bird-watching tours. For a unique souvenir, buy potted plants to take home with you the funds will go toward conservation efforts. Drive here from Kingston in about 45 minutes. Holywell has a user fee with additional fees for guided tours and accommodation.
