A visit to the Hollytrees Museum reveals historic dolls houses, model trains and hand-carved wooden animals. See the extensive collection of costumes and take the chance to dress up as a servant from the past. Spend some time observing the different eras of clocks in the museum’s clock gallery, which watched and wall mounted timepieces that date back to the 17th century.
The former Georgian residence that today houses the museum was first built in 1718 but has been a museum since 1929. The museum contains household items and historic artifacts from the past three centuries.
Wander through the house to find yourself surrounded by decorative arts from Colchester residents of the past. See intricate statues and decorative mirrors coupled with vibrant wall and floor tapestries. The authentic displays recreate rooms from certain eras in Colchester’s past, including a nursery featuring toys and porcelain dolls.
Check out the various costumes displayed throughout the museum to see the attire worn by the residents. See servants outfits and ornate evening gowns. Don a servant’s gown and dry using the dolly peg, an early Victorian washing machine.
In the clock gallery you’ll find a variety of designs from the past 200 years. Listen carefully to hear some of the tocks still ticking as you look at the range of lock case clocks. Every fifteen minutes you’ll hear a chime from a clock with six bells.
Save some time to take a stroll through the surrounding grounds, which feature a sensory garden and a play area for children.
Nestled within Castle Park, the Hollytrees Museum is easily reached from all central locations within Colchester. The museum is free to enter but closes on Mondays, from December 24 to December 27 and on January 1. Some ticketed parking is available in the area.
