See the history of Colorado from a completely new perspective at this ultra-modern and interactive museum.

Opened in 2012, the History Colorado Center is an impressive museum packed full of exciting exhibits and events that are designed to capture the imagination of visitors of all ages. The museum’s offerings combine historical objects with different media, technology and environments to create an ultra-modern and interactive experience.

When you visit the museum, make sure you take time to appreciate the stunning building that houses it, particularly its atrium – a sky-lit, communal space that soars to a height of nearly 25 metres. Here, you can explore the geography of Colorado on a 12-by-18-metre topographical map embedded in the terrazzo floor. Navigate a H.G. Wells-inspired “time machine” to certain points on the map to reveal location-based video stories, including those of the Colorado-Texas Tomato Wars and Shep the Tollbooth Dog. There is also a wall of 132 interlocking LCD screens showing a collage of images that will take you on a 10,000-year journey through the history of Colorado.

As you wander around the museum, you will find many other interesting exhibits, artefacts and activities, including a 3-D miniature model of Denver in 1860, a virtual ride in a Model T Ford, reconstructions of a homestead and a hayloft from the 1920s, and a virtual ski jump off Howelsen Hill. The museum also has an extensive programme of events, such as story time for children, historical re-enactments and lectures by local historians.

Situated in the Golden Triangle Museum District, the History Colorado Center is within walking distance of the central, downtown area of Denver. It is also easily accessible by light rail and bus, and there is plenty of parking available in car parks and on streets nearby. The museum is open every day with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. An admission fee is charged, with discounted rates for senior citizens, students and children.
