The McDonald Mountain Ranch was a highlight of our trip! Nestled in the Black Hills, it is a beautiful retreat with a laid back, country setting, and close to Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park. The deck on our upstairs retreat was so relaxing. We hope to stay again next time we visit SD!
The location was great. We found that the elevated portion Of the room hazardous for my husband with a larger than normal step up causing safety concerns for him. Also, The left side of the King size bed had a ledge which made getting out of bed a bit cumbersome especially in the middle of the night therefore we slept separately. When booking, did not realize there was no sink in the kitchenette so dishes had to be done in the bathroom which was not ideal. In fairness to the owners none of this was discussed with them at the time of our stay.
Our 3rd time staying at the McDonald Mountain Ranch. Wonderful location and hospitality! Wouldn’t stay anywhere else when visiting the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota!
We loved our stay at the McDonald Mtn Ranch. Our hosts were very accommodating in the midst of issues outside of their control. They made us feel very welcome.
We absolutely loved our stay at the ranch! The listing was so accurate and we couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to stay in such a beautiful place. The drive out to the ranch was so scenic, and not to mention you are within a really reasonable distance to many of the attractions that SD has to offer. Highly recommend staying at the ranch and if we are ever in the area we will definitely be back!
This was a very nice place to stay. The location is great if you are looking for a place in the hills. The owner was an interesting person to visit with and we enjoyed his knowledge of the area. Beware that the internet and phone service is not very good in that part of the hills. We had some issues with the thermostats but they called a repair man and I am sure they are fixed by now. We enjoyed the food and drinks they provided that we were not aware of upon making the reservation. That was a nice touch for sure. Even though the weather did not cooperate, the outdoor deck with grills and hot tub were very nice also. We would definitely recommend this place to our friends.
Can't say enough good things about the McDonald Ranch! We stayed in the Family Suite which was very clean and came well equipped. Host are very gracious and the location can't be beat. Just a short drive to Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Windcave National Park to name a few. This was our 2nd stay and the McDonald Ranch and won't be our last.

Picturesque-Quiet-Clean absolutely beautiful.
Richard and his family were so hospitable and welcoming. Everything we needed and more. Would love to stay here again!
Nice room, comfortable bed, clean bathroom, beautiful location. Decorated attractively. Enjoyed early morning walks along the road as well as hikes in the area. Although there are dishes and pans for cooking on the hot plate, there is only a sink in the bathroom so washing up has to be done there. What we really missed was the ability to make ice for water bottles. We tried freezing plastic water bottles overnight but water didn’t freeze.
My family of 3 enjoyed this beautiful property. The only downfall was 90-100+ degree temperatures and the portable air conditioner that couldn't keep up. Thankfully, there was a box fan to use at night in the window. We also brought our own stand-up fan. Safe & comfortable environment, everything else worked wonderfully. Great price, great deal!
This beautiful property has the ability to house several sets of guests and is still able to maintain an appropriate level of privacy. The property owners run a well-managed, well-cared-for site and genuinely enjoy meeting and visiting with their guests to share tips and information about the numerous tourist attractions in their area. We booked the family suite which was cozy for a group of our size but had more than enough space for us and a very homey feel. The location of this site worked super well for the sites and attractions we planned to experience during our visit.
I couldn't imagine staying anywhere else when we visit again. We will be sure to recommend it to our friends and family!
Excellent location for accessing the Black Hills and Custer State Park! Located by a beautiful meadow with picturesque views of trees and deer. We had a wonderful stay!
Adorable, cozy cabin just right for 2 (or 3.). Rustic cabin feel surrounded by nature. So much more inviting than a hotel room in a busy city! Highly recommended!!
