Luxury shopping, authentic souvenirs and Mozart's Birthplace & Museum await on this pretty medieval street.

From the late 16th century through the early part of the 17th, Getreidegasse Lane was a main route from the city to Bavaria. Home to wealthy merchants, many of the “great and the good” of Salzburg society lived here. This legacy can be seen in the wonderful ornate architecture found on the street: wrought-iron signs and portal windows adorn the distinctively narrow and tall buildings of the time.“Grain Lane”, as it is sometimes known, has changed a lot over the years – without losing any of its class. Exclusive jewellery shops rub shoulders with chic clothing boutiques. Lovers of classical music will find plenty of high-quality souvenirs to delight them, as will fans of “The Sound of Music”. Find out more about the young life of the prodigious Mozart, who showed huge ability from a very early age, in Mozart's Birthplace and Museum at Getreidegasse 9. The fascinating tour takes one hour to complete, and you’ll need to book a place online or by telephone before your visit.Alternatively, just enjoy strolling around and taking in your surroundings – street performers are a regular feature here, and there's usually music to be heard too. Step out of the crowds into one of the many courtyards and take in the floral arrangements, the murals on the walls and the many arches. Stroll from Schatz Haus to Universitatsplatz, pausing along the way to look at the painting of “Madonna with Child” and the commemorative plaque for August Bebel, a German politician. For more family-oriented entertainment, check out Miracle's Wax Museum. This contains a replica of Salzburg during the 18th century, allowing an insight into how life was lived here back through the centuries.Getreidegasse Lane is found in the Old Town, near to other must-visit attractions such as the Residenz palace and Salzburg Cathedral. The eastern end of the lane is a short walk from the lift that takes you up Mönchsberg Mountain to the Salzburg Museum of Modern Art. If you dislike crowds, come early to enjoy the architecture before the businesses open. Evening is beautifully illuminated by the many different lights emanating from the many shops. The area is easily accessible throughout the day by bus from the central train station.
