About this property
Historic 2 Story Hand-Hewn Log Cabin Next to Yellowstone Park
Winner of the 2010 Historic Restoration Award from the Montana Historical Alliance , this rare 2 story hand-hewn square log cabin was built in 1907. Austrians used Broad Axes to fashion unbelievable 'compound' dovetail corners locking the logs in place for over 100 years. The address of the cabin is: 25 Papesh Road, Gardiner, Montana if you want to Google Map it's location. It is a short 5 MINUTE drive to the North Entrance of Yellowstone Park.
The cabin sits on 42 quiet acres once called 'The Little Trail Creek Ranch.' It once fed tourists in Yellowstone Park. It is only 4 miles north of Gardiner,Montana and the north entrance to Yellowstone. The cabin is not visible from the highway, and has lots of grass, trees and water. Out front sit the mountains of Yellowstone Park and the Yellowstone River. In the back is the Absaroka Wilderness. The old tree stumps that built the cabin are still visible up the cliffs behind the house.
Herds of Elk, Bison,Deer and Bighorn Sheep use our land all year due to the trees and open water from abundant springs.
We like to go to Yellowstone Hot Sptings, 2 miles away. Open 9-9 everyday except Monday. Chico Hot Springs is 22 miles north, and it has wonderful food. On Sunday, you can eat the brunch and swim for free.
For 13 years we fixed up the cabin. It was fun. There are all new appliances, a 6 burner stove with convection oven, new electric and plumbing, and heating. We used antiques and old wood salvaged from train stations and hotels where needed. The old wood in the cabin has a certain 'glow' that comes from age.
During the renovation, I found many items I put into the chinking. Pocket watches, coins, buttons, even a gun--and 3 bullets in the logs [all at waist high level].
There is a steam shower for use in winter. A 4000 pound Tulikivi wood stove [for use only in winter] uses radiant heat to warm the cabin. It is made of soapstone, which will stay warm a full 2 days after a fire.
There is one bedroom downstairs, and 3 upstairs. A double bed is in the sun room, and the couch downstairs in the Tulikivi room is oddly comfortable for sleeping. So, if you appreciate the Real Deal -- with history, wildlife, quiet and nature-- welcome to our cabin. You'll find our circle of trees cool and refreshing even on the hottest day. We enjoyed our stay here so much! The views were amazing, and so much space for everyone. The cabin was so stunning, I would definitely stay here again.
Our stay was fantastic! We loved the location, the decor, and the coziness of the home. The owner went above and beyond to meet us and teach us how to use the fireplace and also gave us a tour and shared the history of the home. The house has everything you need and the beds are comfortable. The proximity to Gardiner, Yellowstone and Yellowstone hot springs is fantastic. The kids climbed the mountain behind the home every morning and loved the freedom and wilderness!
We loved staying here for our Yellowstone trip. It's in a great location with beautiful views. When we pulled up there was an entire herd of Elk in the front yard.
What a wonderful stay! The house is amazing, comfortable and stocked with essentials for your trip. Condiments, pantry items, shower essentials, ketchup, laundry soap and even towels for the hot springs nearby to avoid a rental fee. The hosts have put a lot of love into this place. So much character and lovely details. We also saw deer right out the window! Highly recommend for your Yellowstone adventure! Would love to return :)
Our family of 7 had plenty of room to recoop after long days in the park. It was a very quiet area and the fans were adequate to cool the bedrooms at night.
We really enjoyed our stay. The cabin was thoughfully supplied with items that we appreciated. The owner left us a one page hand written letter welcoming us. There was a herd of elk right outside the cabin some mornings. Would recommend staying here to anyone. Picture is the view from the front of the cabin. Thank you!!
The property was very nice and we loved the history.
The whole process was easy and the owners very helpful. We will definitely stay here again

We enjoyed your stay at the property. The owners where very helpful with us changing our reservations and the communication was amazing. We will book this location in the future.
We are enjoyed our visit very much, the cabin was full of history that we enjoyed. We found the price to be very reasonable, compared with other properties.
Our family loved our stay here. Surrounded by enduring crafstmanship and whimsical details, we enjoyed a truly unique, memorable and authentic experience. We could feel the decades of love poured into the property.
Beautiful cabin and property! Everything is clean, organized, and provided (of course besides food). So much for the kids to do is hard to get them to leave to see Yellowstone 😄
We had an awesome four night stay! Perfect location after a long day of exploring Yellowstone. We loved sitting on the porch watching the 50 plus elk visit the front yard each evening. Our kids loved playing Yellowstone Monopoly around the kitchen table. Plenty of space for our family of 6. Communication with the owners was great, even had a chance to chat with him about the history of the home, so cool! Highly recommend this home! Thank you!
Loved the Cabin, the location and all of the elk and rabbits in the yard everyday. Everything we needed was in the cabin and/or at the grocery store in Gardiner. Access to Yellowstone was as good as it gets. Easy trip to Bozeman as well.
Alex & Beth’s place was the perfect central location from which to view and explore Yellowstone. The cabin was the most unique place I have ever stayed—it was obvious how much love, ingenuity, creativity, and respect for history went into the restoration and the accommodations for their guests. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen was spacious and fully stocked, and the shower was perfect. The highlight for us, however, were the dozens of elk and sheep who hung out in the yard! The scenery is beautiful as well.
Our family had a wonderful time in this historic house as we visited Yellowstone National Park. The house was just perfect and had all the amenities needed. Each room was comfortable and interesting with all the special and unique finds over the last century. We loved it and hope to return!
Very much enjoyed our time there especially seeing the elk out front most days. Interesting home that’s been refurbished with care. Highly recommend this home in Gardiner and loved it was close to YNP entrance, Yellowstone Hot Springs and Gardiner. Everyone in our family loved it especially the large kitchen and several bedrooms and beautiful view on front porch.
Our stay in this authentic log cabin was a wonderful enhancement to day trips through the park. Elk and mule deer grazing daily;spectaular views of snow capped mountains;property acerage, out buildings, hiking paths, creeks and pond; and historic home with mondern amenities made us feel right at home in the magnificent outdoors
Just a beautiful spot! Super close to shopping, restaurants and the entrance of Yellowstone. Gorgeous expansive views but not isolated as the pictures show. Cabin was a cool experience with surprises everywhere in the nooks and crannies. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.
Spacious charming cabin near yellowstone north entrance
Alex’s cabin was perfect for our family of 6 with plenty of room for everyone and comfortable gathering spaces. It is well stocked with everything you need and has countless books and pamphlets about Yellowstone. Alex is a kind, attentive but not obtrusive host who has lovingly and skillfully restored this 100 year old cabin. It is a short drive to Yellowstone’s Gardiner entrance and about 75 minutes from the Lamar Valley wildlife where we started our first day in the park. I would give this place 6 stars if I could! Thanks Alex!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful historic home. It is in a fantastic location, close to town and the entrance of Yellowstone. Our children loved exploring the property and watching the elk graze in the yard. The house was charming and cozy and was more than enough room for our family of 7. The owners were wonderful and easy to work with. We highly recommend this property to others! Thank you for a wonderful and comfortable stay!
We loved our stay in Gardiner. The cabin was perfect for our family of 8. The kitchen was well equipped, the beds were nice, everything was very clean. The herd of elk that greeted us on the first night there was a nice touch! We needed to reach out to the host for a couple of small things and he was very responsive and helpful. Would definitely stay here again.
The house was unique and beautifully restored. There is a little creek behind the house and the mountain goes straight up behind it. We were visiting nightly by an elk and her calf. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
