Wander the chic streets of this former European enclave, now a fashionable shopping and entertainment district.

In contrast to the rest of the city, the French Concession is a peaceful district, with wide avenues lined with plane trees. It was established as a French settlement in the mid-19th century by agreement between the French Consul to Shanghai and the Governor. Although it was formally returned to Shanghai following the Second World War, this area retains a distinctly elegant atmosphere and has become a magnet for upmarket boutiques and restaurants.

Throughout its history, the French Concession has been a sought-out address for both European and Chinese residents. You’ll discover many impressive colonial-style villas and art deco mansions, as well as a number of more recent luxury apartments.

A number of key figures in Chinese politics live within this area. Visit the former residence of Sun Yat-sen, on Xiangshan Road, to learn about the life of the father of China’s republic. It now houses a museum full of memorabilia and documents from the era. His wife, Soong Ching Ling, also played a significant role, and her former residence on Huaihai Middle Road has also been turned into a fascinating political museum.

This area also has enough boutiques and shopping centres to satisfy the most avid shopper. Pick up a beautiful, made-to-measure, Shanghai-style silk dress from one of the shops along Changle Lu, or head to Julu or Xinle Roads to browse the independent boutiques. Along Huaihai Road, you’ll find the more recognisable fashion chains and high-end brands.

Take a break from the bustling Huaihai Road with a visit to the popular Fuxing Park. It is landscaped in a European style with formal gardens, but if you visit in the morning, you’ll see many tai chi artists and mah-jong players enjoying the peace and quiet.

This area is also home to a wide choice of cafés, restaurants, bars and clubs. You’ll find dining options including everything from authentic Shanghai cuisine to Italian trattorias and wine bars, as well as gourmet French restaurants. This area’s history is fully reflected by its food!

You can easily reach the French Concession on foot from The Bund. Otherwise, the closest metro station is Xujiahui.
