Sharp objects, like your Swiss Army knife, and dangerous products which are flammable or explosive, such as flares, bleaching agents and gasoline, are also not allowed.

• The aisles of an airplane are no place for a fashion parade. Wear layers and pick shoes that are roomy, flat and easy to slip on and off.
• Most travellers are aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by long periods of inactivity. To lower your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression socks and keep your legs and feet moving.

• Airport security personnel first need to know that you have a valid ID and travel documents before you're allowed to proceed any further. Keep them close by.
• Next up, both you and your carry-on bag will be X-rayed. To speed things up, take off anything that might set the alarms off. Personal belongings such as your coat, belt and earphones need to go through the machine.
• For just a few minutes, you'll need to unplug from technology. Your tablet, phone and any other electronics also need to be sent through the scanner.
• Any liquids or gels, such as hair oil or hand cream, that you want to take on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several precious minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on sneakers usually aren't.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
