Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you prepare well enough. We've put together a list of handy hints that will get your Tikitiki holiday started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Flying can be a stress-free experience if you take the right gear. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletries, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a spare set of clothes and a few magazines. Secondly, make room in your hand luggage for your mobile phone, a charger, any vital medications and perhaps a quality neck pillow as well. Last, but definitely not least, remember to bring your passport, travel papers and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Pack all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked baggage. Any liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Sharp or pointed objects, like your Swiss Army knife, and dangerous products which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and gasoline, are also prohibited.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of a plane are no place for a fashion parade. Don comfortable layers and choose shoes that are flat and easy to slip on and off.
• Most travellers have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To lower your risk on board, drink lots of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and keep your feet and legs moving.

• Be sure to keep your boarding pass and ID within close reach. They're the first items you'll be asked to show at security.
• Your jacket, belt, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your headphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them before your turn arrives.
• All your electronics, including your tablet and phone, are also required to be scanned.
• Any liquids or gels, such as shampoo or hairspray, that you want to take on board must be no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• There's a good chance you'll be required to remove your shoes for scanning, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a good idea.
• Sharp or pointed objects (like knives and scissors) can't be taken on board. They'll be confiscated at security, so put them in your checked suitcase.
