• First things first, pack your passport, travel docs, cash and medications. Next, you'll need some extra in-flight entertainment to while away the time. A thrilling novel and a laptop filled with your favourite movies are good options. If you intend to catch forty winks, a comfy neck pillow and some earplugs will also be useful. Finally, find room for a toothbrush and some cleansing wipes so you'll touchdown looking and feeling fresh.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of prohibited items can differ between airlines, the general guide to follow is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like screwdrivers, pocket knives, spray paint and fireworks. Sports equipment like hockey sticks, and items that could injure passengers, such as firearms and swords, can't come on board with you either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your priority is to be as comfortable as possible. Opt for shoes that are easy to pull on and off, dress in loose, natural-fibre clothing and remember to bring a jacket in case you get chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can pose a risk on long-haul flights. It results from blood clots forming due to inactivity and poor circulation, so do some gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression tights or socks.

• Your boarding pass and passport will need to be presented to airport security. Have them close by so you don't hold up the queue.
• Your belt, coat, keys and other small items, like your earphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them before your turn arrives.
• All electronic devices, including your tablet and phone, are also required to be separately scanned.
• Can't travel without your favourite hand cream? As long as the volume is no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-lock bag, it's fine to bring with you in your carry-on bag.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you several precious minutes. Hiking or heavy-style boots are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Slip-on sneakers usually aren't.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
