Wherever you're coming from, flying can be a seamless experience if you're well organised. We've compiled a list of essential travel tips that will get your Playa escape started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane trip can be a comfortable experience if you take the right stuff. First things first, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a spare set of clothes and a few magazines. Secondly, find a spot in your carry-on bag for your laptop, a charger, any daily medications and perhaps a comfy neck pillow as well. Last, but definitely not least, don't forget to take your passport, travel docs and your bank cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of restricted items differs between airlines, the general rule of thumb is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like screwdrivers, pocket knives, fuel and fireworks. Sporting equipment like ice skates, and items that could injure passengers, such as swords and guns, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Choose comfort over style. Prepare for changes in temperature by dressing in layers, and opt for closed-toe, flat shoes like slip-ons.
• Most of us have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To lower your risk on board, drink lots of water, consider wearing compression socks and do gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat.

Being organised before you arrive at the airport will help make your trip to Playa a piece of cake. Here are some useful tips and tricks for a speedy journey past security:

• Your passport and travel documents will need to be inspected by security personnel. Keep them handy to avoid fumbling around for them.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Remove anything on you that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• All your electronic gadgets, including your phone and tablet, are also required to be scanned.
• Remove liquids and gels from your carry-on bag. They often need to be sent through the X-ray separately. Each product should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you valuable minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Slip-on shoes usually aren't.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, put them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
