Cheap Flights to Long Island

If you're poorly prepared, airports and flying can be tough. But don't hit the panic button just yet. Follow these useful tips for a pleasant start to your getaway in Long Island. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• First, put in your passport, travel documents, bank cards and daily medications. Next, you'll need some in-flight entertainment to while away the time. A thrilling novel and a phone filled with your favourite shows are some terrific options. If you plan to catch up on some sleep, a comfy neck pillow and some earplugs will also be useful. Finally, leave space for a toothbrush and some facial wipes to ensure you touchdown feeling fresh and raring to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Make sure you don't have a Swiss Army knife hiding in the bottom of your hand luggage. Other prohibited items include flammable or explosive substances, like aerosols and matches, and gels and liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Your aim is to be as comfortable as possible. Choose a pair of flat, closed-toe shoes, dress in loose, breathable clothing and remember to bring a jacket in case you get cold in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to walk around the cabin or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

• Security personnel first need to establish that you have a valid ID and boarding pass before anything else. Have them in your hand, ready for inspection.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• Your electronic devices like laptops and phones will also have to go through the machine for inspection. No need to worry though, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Travelling with a new hand and nail cream? No problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-close bag, it's fine to bring with you on board.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you several precious minutes. Boots and heavy shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on shoes are usually not.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them safely away in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed on board.
