Wherever you're coming from, flying can be an enjoyable experience if you're well prepared. We've compiled a list of handy tips that will get your Delta holiday started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Travelling on a plane can be a comfortable experience if you carry the right things. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletries, such as toothpaste, a toothbrush and some deodorant, a spare set of clothes and something to read. Next, find room in your hand luggage for your laptop, a charger, medications and maybe a neck pillow as well. Last, but definitely not least, be sure to take your passport, travel documents and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of prohibited items can differ between air carriers, the general rule of thumb is avoid carrying anything sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes screwdrivers, drills, spray paint and flares. Sporting equipment like baseball bats, and items that could harm other people, such as swords and guns, can't come on board with you either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your aim is to feel as comfortable as you can. Opt for shoes that are easy to pull on and off, dress in loose, natural-fibre clothing and remember to take a pullover in case you get cold in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a potential risk on long-haul flights. It results from blood clotting due to poor circulation and inactivity, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks.

• Keep your travel documents and passport someplace easily accessible. They're the first items you'll be asked to present to security.
• Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your coat, belt, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your earphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them as your turn draws near.
• All your electronics, including your phone and tablet, will also need to be scanned separately.
• Can't travel without your favourite cologne? No problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-lock bag, it's fine to bring with you in your carry-on.
• It's also possible you'll be required to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a wise idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them safely away in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
