If you're poorly prepared, airports and flying can be testing. But there's no need to worry. Follow these handy tips and enjoy a pleasant start to your getaway in Bali. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• It's easy — first, pack in your passport, travel documents, credit cards and daily medications. Next, you'll need some entertainment to while away the time. A juicy novel and a phone filled with your favourite shows are some great options. If you intend to take a quick nap, a comfy neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also come in handy. Finally, squeeze in a toothbrush and some cleansing wipes so you'll touchdown feeling fresh and raring to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Pack all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked baggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated. Sharp or pointed objects, like your treasured Swiss Army knife, and dangerous products which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and matches, are also not allowed.

• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to walk around the cabin and stretch your legs or do some simple exercises in your seat to promote better circulation.

• For just a few minutes, you'll have to unplug from technology. Your phone, laptop and any other electronic gadgets also need to go through the scanner.
• Want to bring along your favourite cologne or perfume? As long as the volume is no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a zip-lock bag, it's OK to bring with you in your carry-on luggage.
• Lightweight sneakers are a practical footwear choice as you're less likely to have to remove them when going through security. Safety boots and heavier-style shoes are usually subjected to additional screening.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them safely away in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed on board.
