Home to a pioneering wildlife sanctuary, beautiful botanical gardens and free-flight aviary, the colourful Flamingo Gardens are located in Davie, just half an hour south of Fort LauderdaleA great option for a convenient day trip from the city. these gardens are bursting with things to see so make the most of your day and arrive early. A fun way to see the enclosures is to hop on the tram for an informative 25-minute tour. Alternatively, wander around at your leisure, taking care not to bump into the free-roaming peacocks as they strut their stuff. The Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary is home to an eclectic mix of injured animals and birds that are unable to be released back into the wild. Marvel at the rare Florida panthers or enjoy an educational exhibit at the alligator lagoon before getting close to the bald eagles at the Bird of Prey Center. This sanctuary is home to some fantastic exhibits but the highlight is definitely the Flamingo Pond where visitors can hand-feed Caribbean Flamingos as they pose prettily on one foot.A colourful assault on the senses, the Wray Botanical Garden features over 3,000 species of exotic tropical plants and trees. These include a 31-metre cluster fig as well as the wonderful dynamite tree, named after the explosive sound of its ripe fruit as it splits into segments. For an olfactory treat, meander through the citrus groves and flowering plants and shrubs of the Fragrance Garden. Lose yourself in the iridescent Butterfly Garden where pink spot sulphurs and South American malachites flit among tropical fruit trees. Visit the adjacent Hummingbird Garden in winter and have your camera handy to snap the gorgeous ruby throated hummingbird.Wrap it all up with a tour of the Wray Home Museum. Built in 1933, this is a wonderful example of typical south-Florida architecture. Wray Family portraits, letters and other personal items give visitors an interesting snapshot of life in South Florida in the 1930s. As you step back into the sunshine, take a moment to appreciate the towering 200-year-old live oaks that surround the home. These wonderful gardens also stage events throughout the year including the Festival and Bonsai Show as well as the artistic Flamingo Fest. A visit here is not just a great day out but also supports wildlife rescue so make sure this is at the top of your Florida itinerary.
