The iconic home of the Boston Red Sox is on the must-see list of every red-blooded baseball fan.

Fenway Park exudes sporting history and heritage. The home of the legendary Boston Red Sox is one of the oldest ballparks in America. If your visit coincides with a home fixture, treat yourself to a ticket and experience the heady atmosphere and excitement of this uniquely American passion. The park hosted its first game in 1912, when Boston beat the team known today throughout the world as the famous New York Yankees. Numerous additions and refurbishments over the years have improved the facilities, although it’s still one of the smallest Major League Baseball stadiums. This makes it an especially intimate venue to watch a game but means that tickets are like gold dust. One of the more quirky renovations resulted in the Green Monster, a lurid green, 11-metre tall wall on the left field. It’s impossible not to be caught up in the magic the minute you enter the stadium and spot the red brickwork stands, the statues of the sport’s past heroes, and the historic murals and signs that are carefully preserved. The tension mounts, ramped up by the traditional organ music that announces the run-up to the game, while the crowd snacks on hot dogs and beer. If you’re a baseball virgin, ask your neighbour to explain the rules: you’ll enjoy the experience a lot more if you have some idea what’s going on! Locals are usually more than happy to offer a running commentary – usually highly partisan! If you can’t get a ticket to a game, a good alternative is to take a guided tour. The basic one-hour walking tour will introduce you to the history of the Red Sox and their famous home. Other tours add on more features such as the Batting Practice Tour, the Sunday Premium Tour or the Birthday Package. Check the daily tour schedule during the Major League season of April to October.Fenway Park is in central Boston and is easily reached by subway and bus. On-site parking is expensive, but some local hotels offer free shuttles for guests. Buy your ticket for the game well in advance as home games always sell out quickly.
