We stayed for two nights. Cosy room, with everything we could have needed. The decor throughout the building was lovely. The food from the kitchen was outstanding, we tried the breakfast and dinner menus - great quality food - yum! Special call out to Debs in the bar/restaurant waiting team, thank you for the wonderful service and your cheerful manner - you were the highlight of our stay :)

Steampunk Chic
The renovated rooms in this hotel are super lux and have a bit of a steampunk vibe to them, with dark jewel tones, many clocks, and copper piping in the spacious bathroom. TV, fridge, claw foot bathtub, options for heating and a fan for cooling, and a sumptuous velvet duvet made the overnight stay super relaxing. Had a three course meal at Brac and Bow downstairs that did not disappoint. Staying here was a treat.

Will be back!
We will definitely be back and planning to return with friends. The only low point was a very busy restaurant so food took a while one evening- however it was good food!!! And advise not to try for an early night if there’s s wedding at the venue! Felt like the band was in the room- however- it was good music!!!!

I loved the thematic decor of the piriraku room, so quaint, finished to a high standard, beautiful architectural features with the modern conveniences. I stayed in the hotel on my own (no reception overnight and no other guests). I did have a contact number (should I need it) and I certainly did not feel unsafe, it just wasn't what I had expected or experienced before. However, I would definitely recommend and stay again.

Treat yourself !
We enjoyed a fabulous birthday weekend in the Wairapara - the refurbished Royal Hotel was the perfect place to base ourselves for two nights. It was quirky, cosy and welcoming - we loved the decor, the sense of history and the good range of dining options. The only disappointment was that we did not meet the famous dogs - maybe next year.

The New Zealand steam punk theme was very cool. Parking is a bit restricted and the restaurant/bar is very good but very busy (which is a symptom of the good thing). So make sure you book a table very early.

The decor which was quirky, beautifully done, comfortable and charming. Our room and ensuite was incredibly clean, something which was really appreciated. Great food at the restaurant Brac and Bow, where we enjoyed one of the best meals we've eaten in a long time. Only quibble was the lack of human interaction when checking in and checking out. But that's just a personal preference. Lovely establishment and I'd can't wait go to back for another visit.

Restyled old pub. Front rooms a bit noisy. Decor is 'interesting' by the time you unload all the cushions off the bed, hardly any space to step around the bed. Mats on the floor make for a slip and trip risk - and get caught under the door to the room.

The hosts were absolutely amazing, the service great and the food was excellent. The rooms were a huge surprise, chic and beautifully decorated. If you have not been there yet, make the effort, well worth it.

Beautifully restored hotel, both in the downstairs bar area as well as the rooms. We booked very last minute and think got the last room which was pretty small. That said it was beautifully appointed, clean and comfy and was perfect for retiring too after dinner downstairs. Shared bathrooms were always clean and again, beautifully restored.

Wonderful refurbishment done to a high quality. A wonderful business or couples hotel choice for the Wairapapa. The property has an on-site bar and restaurant which has also been recently re-done.

Such a cool design and decor throughout the building! We stayed in the double with a shared bathroom, it was small but was perfect as we were just staying the night post a wedding in Martinborough. Comfy bed and great shower! We were very grateful we were able to check in early and get ready as we had driven down from Auckland.

Checking in was a shocking experience!! We had a wedding to get to so was on a deadline and there was nobody to check us in even when they knew we were arriving. Eventually got sorted and got an upgraded room to compensate which was very much appreciated. The decor and furnishings were top notch!

Awesome little hotel, that has been done up to reflect an oldie worldie vibe with a touch of steam punk thrown in. What’s that ? Well a nod to the era that on paper invented fantastical machines. Time machines, flying machines. A look to the possible future from the past. Delightful and clean as a whistle and fun. Great location for wineries, rail trips to Wellington and the bike trail over the Rimutukas.

It was certainly uniquely enjoyable. Shower difficult for seniors. No clothes hanging facility. Apart from that, lovely comfy bed. Enjoyable meal. Close to where we wanted to be.

Comfortable bed but strange set up!
The room was querky, as you see from the photos, individually decorated. The bed was comfortable. But there was nowhere to put things, nowhere to unpack any clothes to and only the floor for suitcases. The hotel shuts on Monday and Tuesday (we were staying over these days) so there was no room service on those days, so if you ran out of tea etc. Tough! There was no information in the room for local or tourist things. Very much left to yourself there.

The Royal Hotel is a historic hotel that has been fabulously renovated. The whole building is a treat to be in, with a fun steampunk theme. The rooms, bathrooms, bar & restaurant are all furnished very beautifully which was a joy to experience. Our room was No. 2 and was with a shared bathroom. The bed was very comfortable with gorgeous sheets and the shared bathroom was really lovely. One thing to note is that the room we booked was VERY SMALL. As in absolutely tiny- room for the bed, one bedside table and a fan. We were riding the Remutaka Rail Trail and had a bit of gear with us & it was quite a squeeze. The other thing to note is as a historic hotel, they don’t have air conditioning and it was very hot. A fan was provided for this. On our our way out the next day, we had a peek into the other rooms and it looks like the rooms with their own bathrooms were much larger and included kitchen facilities. I would recommend paying that bit extra for the larger room. The staff here are absolutely lovely and we had a wonderful stay. I would love to go back and stay in the larger rooms because it’s a very unique and special place!

This is not just a hotel, this is a living museum. Intertwined with decadent art, lavish antiques and a serious eye for detail- this hotel was beyond any hotel. A historical site from the late 1800's, this hotel underwent a deep rennovation in 2017 to manifest the most elegant steam punk-esque, victorian inspired venue; while simultaneously bringing out the rich history of the area and culture. From the outside it appears to be "an old hotel", but once you walk in you will be engulfed in the magnificence of fine art, collectibles, antiques and charming customer service. I booked a reservation with my partner here assuming the photos were too good to be true. To our surprise, the photos did not do this place any justice. This encouraged me to do some digging on the history of the hotel. (it's worth a google!) From check in to check out, every single thing went as smoothly as can be imagined. My partner and I dined in the restaurant downstairs and satisfied our hunger on a marvelous cheeseboard with local bread, fish and chips, a hearty steak, and local wines. (compliments to the lady chef who obviously took a great deal of pride in her culinary arts. ) Our room was G. Dower's room, which had a stunning claw foot bath tub, tasteful toiletries, every amenity we could have wanted in a meticulously clean and well cared for room. Unfortunately, I've run out of character space. See a full review on Google or Trip Advisor.

Decor was AMAZING! Beautifully refurbed. So many things to take in. Steam-punk glam everywhere. Food was also excellent. Staff are trying but they fell short - poorly informed - slow service in bar. Couldn’t provide current wine list - most beers Not available but.... be patient and it is well worth a visit 🛄
