Find the Fassa Valley deep in the Dolomites of northern Italy’s Trentino region. Explore quaint alpine villages, unchanged for centuries, which welcome thousands of visitors every year to their friendly chalets.
The Avisio stream flows between the mountains of Marmolada, Sella, Sassolungo and Catinaccio, summits that guard over a culturally unique collection of seven municipalities. Watch the clouds moving over the incredible mountain peaks from the clusters of traditional wooden houses that are gathered in the crevices of the green hills. Look up at sunset to see the red glow that the Dolomite Mountains take on. This magical phenomenon is known as Enrosadira.
In the winter, families descend to the Fassa Valley to enjoy snow sports. Visit the Dolomiti Superski snow resort network, which features seven different resorts. In the summer, these villages come alive with celebrations and events. Hike in the scenic mountains and look out over the stunning Dolomite landscape to see green fields carpeted with wildflowers, lush green forests, jagged cliffs and sparkling lakes. Rent a mountain bike to explore the terrain at a different pace.
See striking rock formations, dizzyingly tall spruce fir trees and a 6-hectare (15-acre) deer park within Parco Naturale Provinciale di Paneveggio. Stop by the nature park of Sciliar-Catinaccio, where jagged canyons and cliffs attract adventurous climbers.
The valley is known as one of the last places on earth where the unique Ladin language is spoken. Learn about the cultural traditions of the Ladin people, an ethnic minority particular to this part of Europe. Afterwards, unwind at an alpine wellness centre and sample the fine produce and delicacies of the Dolomites at one of the unique restaurants in the villages.
The beautiful scenery of the Fassa Valley is best appreciated on foot, and each village can provide tourist information. Choose a luxurious hotel in one of the villages, or as an alternative, stay in a traditional alpine chalet. Arrive by bus from northern Italy’s major tourist hubs, including Trento and Bolzano. Extra services are available during peak times, particularly throughout the summer.
