About this property
Modern cabin - private mountaintop, hot tub, outdoor shower, outdoor fireplace
A private mountaintop cabin on 10+ wooded acres, with no neighbors in sight. Steel Nest is an architect-designed escape surrounded by forest, with walls of windows, a screened porch, private hot tub, outdoor fireplace, and cozy wood stove.
Spend your days wandering the trail, soaking among the trees, or doing absolutely nothing. At night, step outside for remarkably clear starry skies. This is mountain time, with a little more space and a lot more privacy.
Steel Nest was designed for long mornings, slow afternoons and evenings that don't need a plan.
Coffee on the screened porch. A walk through the woods. A soak in the hot tub as the forest quiets down. Then a fire in the Morsø wood stove while the stars come out.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT
• Total privacy on 10+ wooded acres • Architect-designed cabin with walls of windows • Private hot tub among the trees • Screened porch for coffee, cocktails & rainy days • Radiant heated floors + Morsø wood stove • Private trail + bocce court • Outdoor fireplace • Seasonal outdoor shower • Fast Starlink WiFi
Inside, the open living space brings the forest in through walls of windows. Settle into the leather sofa, warm up by the wood stove or open the screened porch doors and listen to the woods.
The kitchen is fully equipped for nights in, with cookware, dishes, wine glasses, pantry basics and a Weber propane grill. Coffee is covered too, with a Keurig, drip maker and pour-over setup.
SLEEPING
Primary Bedroom - King bed, sitting area, forest views + Roku TV
Second Bedroom - Queen bed + woodland views
BATHROOMS
The upstairs full bathroom has heated tile floors, dual vanities and a walk-in rainfall shower.
A half bath is on the main level with direct access to the outdoor shower.
WHEN THE WEATHER TURNS
Rain doesn't ruin a stay here - it becomes part of it. Settle onto the screened porch and listen to rain on the roof while the forest disappears into the mist.
Slow days, or productive ones. When you're ready to unplug, you'll find books, board games, puzzles and cards for lingering evenings indoors. When you need to stay connected, fast Starlink WiFi makes remote work easy.
In fall, the Blue Ridge forests turn brilliant with color. In winter, the wood stove and radiant floors make the cabin especially cozy. And on clear nights, the lack of light pollution makes the stars something to step outside for.
Steel Nest is for couples, friends or anyone who wants a little more space, a little more privacy, and a lot less noise.
To ensure The Steel Nest is the perfect fit for your getaway, please review the following details about the cabin's unique character:
- No air conditioning: Steel Nest was intentionally designed without AC to embrace mountain living. Open the windows and enjoy the cool evening air. If AC is essential to your comfort, this may not be the right fit.
- Limited TV: The only TV is in the primary bedroom. The cabin is designed to encourage time outdoors, around the fire, and together.
- No window coverings: The cabin has no curtains or blinds, so you’ll wake with the sunrise and may fall asleep beneath the stars.
- Hot tub: We drain, clean, and refill the hot tub between every stay. It may take until the evening of arrival to reach its ideal temperature.
- Outdoor shower: The shower is seasonal and is shut down when overnight temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing, typically from November through March.
- Firewood: Firewood is not provided. Please bring your own if you’d like to use the indoor Morsø wood stove or outdoor fireplace.
- Fire restrictions: Seasonal county burn bans may occasionally restrict outdoor fires and are outside of our control.
- What’s provided: We supply linens, towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, paper products, starter coffee supplies, and basic pantry essentials for a comfortable stay.
OUTDOOR CAMERA: There is an outdoor camera facing the parking area as well as a trail cam at the entrance gate. They are on 24/7 and can record video and sound.

Everything about this listing was fabulous from the beginning to the end of our three night stay! Such a wonderful, peaceful place surrounded by trees and singing birds. The cabin was comfortable and immaculate. The hot tub and outdoor fireplace were enjoyed each evening....so relaxing! The kitchen was well fitted out with everything we needed to prepare our meals. Our host Allison was very responsive and prepared us well for our stay. It was a convenient place to meet our sister and brother in law, so we definitely plan to try and return. Thank you Allison for sharing your lovely home with us!
This was the perfect cabin for a much-needed weekend away! It was so secluded and so quiet! The heated floors made the whole cabin feel like we were wrapped in a cocoon. Perfect for a cold winter weekend! The cabin is as beautiful as the surrounding forest. The host was lovely as well. We loved it and can't wait to come back!
Fantastic cabin! Very clean when we arrived and truely private, no neighbors in sight. The worst thing I could find was a light out above the grill. My wife will definitely be back to this cabin.
What a wonderful and amazing house in an even more amazing location! If you are looking for a peaceful getaway surrounded by nature this is definitely the place to be.
We love this property! Spend the day visiting and hiking at Mount Rogers and the evening relaxing in the hot tub. If you want to unplug and unwind, I highly recommend visiting the Steel Nest!
The Still Nest is just beautiful! My wife and I love to find new fun places to stay for overnight get away, but few check all the boxes for us. This place does though! Quite, hot tub, fire place, full kitchen, no close neighbors and uniquely decorated. We loved our stay and will defiantly be coming back. Thanks Alison!
Loved our fall stay in this gorgeous cabin. The indoor spaces were cozy and serene, with everything we needed for cooking simple meals at hand. Loved the outdoor spaces - grill, screen porch, fireplace area, and hot tub all wonderfully designed, in working order and easy to use with clear instructions provided. Owner was friendly and communicated throughout.
The house is very thoughtful in its construction. Simple ,Modern and rustic all.at once. Bocce ball court is a great addition we enjoyed playing. Trail around property was perfect for afternoon walks. We loved it. Oh and guitar was an added bonus as well.
This cabin was everything we were looking for. Secluded and peaceful, it felt like we were truly tucked away in nature—but still close enough for great daytime hikes. The space was clean, serene, and thoughtfully designed with a beautiful blend of modern rustic charm and natural elements. We especially appreciated the small touches: warm floors to step onto in the morning, the refreshing mountain air gently blowing through the cabin, and a fully stocked kitchen that made it easy to cook almost every day. The hot tub was a dream after long hikes, and the bright, airy upstairs was a lovely place to unwind. This place strikes the right balance of comfort, style, and tranquility. We hope to return.
What a wonderful property. If you want a stay in a work of art tucked on the side of a mountain this is your place. Everything you could need less food or clothing is provided including internet. We encountered one blip and the property owner immediately solved the problem, at 10 pm no less. The hot tub is icing on the cake and perfect after a day of hiking Mount Rogers. You will not find a nicer place to stay if planning a trip to Grayson Highlands State Park.
All I feel is relaxed, renewed, and a bit closer to nature after my stay here. From being greeted by a beautiful live small turtle in the gardens to having everything in the Steel Nest you could need, we were able to immerse ourselves in the serene surroundings without having to leave. The home is magical and really allowed us to be present and enjoy the sounds, sights, and energy of nature and the thoughtful, architecturally charming and impressive space, finishes, and co-exsistence of the modern home with the outdoors. The stay was bliss nonstop. I hope we can come back again to unwind, recharge, and feel the magic of this oasis.
After a particularly exhausting week, I'd had enough of being accessible and decided I needed to get away. I pulled up VRBO during a meeting I was 25% paying attention to so that I coule browse options within a resonable driving distance (six hours or less) from DC for a weekend getaway - and then I found the Steel Nest. From the pictures, it was exactly what I needed - nature, solace and a hot tub. I arrived on a Friday evening, shortly before sunset and knew that I had made the right choice. I enjoyed a lazy evening on the three seasons room amongst the cool night air. In the wee hours of the morning, I was awoken by the thunder as lightening lit up the windows on three sides of the primary bedroom and rain plinked on the roof. After waking at a more reasonable hour, I took a walk around the property as I waited for my Instacart order from Food City to arrive in time for a late breakfast. The rest of the day was spent reading, relaxing in the hot tub, listening to the rustle of the trees or an errant cow moo (and perhaps the cow may have overheard me singing terribly off key, but full of joy). I left on Sunday at 10:30am and check out was a breeze. I didn't need anything from Allison during my stay, but her hospitality before arriving and after departing as well as the thoughtfulness of the home's app was lovely. Thabk you again, Allison, for letting me reset at the Steel Nest. Until next time.
Secluded, clean and comfortable beds absolutely loved the place I wish my stay could have been longer. Hot tub was very clean, kitchen fully stocked with kitchen essentials and pantry items. I will be staying again in the future i would Definitely recommend if you are looking for peace and quiet.
Across many different vacation home rentals we have experienced over the years, perhaps none have provided my wife and I the peace and joy that Alison’s beautiful cabin has. The fact that this was our fifth (?) stay confirms our endorsement of this cabin. I understand that this home was designed by a Charlotte architect and those thoughtful and quality details are all around you. The cabin exudes a stylish comfort and warmth and the secluded location and hot tub make for a serene setting. For the self-sufficient traveler who enjoys not seeing neighbors, cooking a great meal and enjoying a nice glass of wine by an outdoor fireplace in a home with elevated design and details all around you, you have found your next vacation home rental. Also, Alison ranks as an all-time favorite and responsive host with great local knowledge and we look forward to our next (6th?) visit.
Our stay was amazing. The cabin was everything it was advertised to be and Alison ensure we had everything we needed to have a great weekend away. We’ll definitely be staying here again.
This is a hidden gem! We did not want to leave! The privacy and the sounds of nature made this place one we will continue returning to. The host was very kind and responsive. Thank you for a great time!
