Enjoy astounding views of the Cuillin mountains, which stand on the banks of a glistening sea loch, from this charming hamlet on the Isle of Skye.

Drive down a long, winding road through the heart of the Isle of Skye to reach Elgol, a tiny village that offers stunning views of the Cuillin, the island’s tooth-shaped mountain range. The journey here leads down one of the best roads on the island, but the end result is even more impressive. Stand in awe of this spectacular mountain range and join a hiking trail or launch a boat to get even closer to its jagged peaks.

Stroll around the hamlet, which is spread out around the banks of Loch Scavaig. Fishing boats bob in the harbour and a pebble beach runs along the edge of the village. Wander down to the beach to see the horseshoe shape of the Cuillin ridge, making sure to return to Elgol at dusk to see this panorama lit by the colours of sunset.

Join one of the boat trips that take you closer to this grand mountain range. Motorboats run from the harbour and travel around islands such as Canna and Soay, before heading to Loch Scavaig. This glacial lake offers you the best vantage point of the soaring peaks of the Cuillins. Bring your camera for photos of munroes such as Sgurr Alasdair and Bla Bheinn.

Once your boat has returned, stop in Elgol for a drink in the village café. Some of the accommodation here have restaurants, but book ahead to guarantee a seat at these small venues.

Follow the road around the tip of the peninsula to reach Glasnakille, a small crofting village with views over Loch Slapin and Loch Eishort. Head down to the beach to find the hidden Spar Cave.

Elgol can be reached by car or on a local bus and there is ample free parking in the village. Stop on your journey here to see sights such as Cill Chriosd, a ruined church with an atmospheric graveyard. Visit in late spring, between April and June, for mild weather and long days without the crowds that are drawn here in August.
