As the beginning of the Mayan world, Cancun holds historic significance. The Mayan people lived around parts of Central America as long ago as 1800 BC according to archaeologists, and the area surrounding Cancun was a centre for a large tract of their civilization. Nowadays, visitors flock to the El Rey Ruins in the centre of Cancun to explore their heritage.
Once an ancient Mayan city, El Rey was abandoned when the Spanish arrived. Here you can see an array of stone structures which remain and which will give you an impression of what life here was once like. You’ll even get the chance to explore a Mayan temple and see the burial site of one of the Mayans’ important figures.
On the stone walls around the site and you’ll be able to see some of the ancient paintings which remain to this day. Take a walk around the El Rey ruins and you’ll be rewarded with an experience that will give you a striking insight into Mayan heritage and culture.
Alongside all of this, El Rey is also home to a large colony of iguanas. When you pay a visit, you’ll get a close-up view of these fascinating creatures. If you bring along some fruit or bread and you’ll even be able to feed them as they explore the ruins of the old city for themselves.
Situated in the heart of Cancun’s hotel district by the lagoon, the El Rey Ruins can be accessed by bus or taxi. If you want to drive here, parking is available around the area for a fee. It will cost you to access the ruins, but admission is free on Sundays. It’s a good idea to bring sunscreen with you as there is little shade here.
