Usethis iconic Quito hill as an ever-present landmark point when navigating thecity or climb to its peak to enjoy panoramic views of the Andes alongside theVirgen de Quito statue.

Climb the El Panecillo hill in thesouthern sector of Quito’s Old Town for incredible views of the city andbeyond. The hill's name derives from its shape, which resembles a loaf of bread. Atopthe curious “loaf”, an aluminium statue of Virgen de Quito (Madonna of Quito)marks the peak of the hill. Use this landmark as a bearing point whileexploring the city or enjoy its nearby attractions.

Take an early morning walk up ElPanecillo and start your day looking onto the sunlit Quito panorama from thehill’s lookout. This vantage point, sitting 3,016 metres (9,895 feet) above sealevel, can also be easily reached by bus or cab, for those who aren’t fond ofclimbing the steep concrete stairs. Walk around the grassy flat hilltop fordifferent angles of the city.

Spend a moment admiring the Virgen deQuito, whose frame is made up of 7,000 pieces of aluminium. Agustín de laHerrán Matorras sculpted it in 1976 as a tribute to Bernardo de Legarda’sstatue of the same name, which depicts the Madonna with angel’s wings. Withinthe statue’s base, an on-site museum and viewing platforms are worth a visit.Browse exhibits explaining the religious and historical significance of thearea to indigenous Andeans and the Spanish colonials. Viewing platforms arespread over three floors. Climb to each and enjoy heightened views of Quito andthe surrounding mountain ranges.

Before you leave, browse the wares offered by craft vendors around the statue and pick out a souvenir to remember your visit.Occasionally, you might witness religious processions chanting and praying asthey walk down El Panecillo’s steps.

This being a popular touristdestination, keep a close eye on your valuables at all times. Police patrol thearea, but pickpockets are still common.

El Panecillo can be seen in Quito’s Old Town from around the city. The Virgen de Quito is open daily and charges asmall admission fee.
