Spend a peaceful day in Dover, a town where you can explore caves, admire mountainous landscapes and visit Australia's southernmost point.

Dover combines a relaxing seaside atmosphere with proximity to the wilderness of Tasmania's Southwest National Park. Make the most of the variety of outdoor activities on offer. Stretch out in Southport's sandy coves, experience Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs or climb Adamsons Peak and watch the sun set over the horizon.

Founded in 1845, Dover was once used as a convict station. Today, the town’s main street is a world away from this past, instead offering pleasant shopping and dining options. Be sure to taste the region’s fresh seafood, including Atlantic salmon and abalone, as well as produce such as apples. Mingle with friendly locals who are proud to live in one of the world's southernmost towns.

Located on one edge of Port Esperance Bay, Dover is close to a number of peaceful coves and beaches. Spend a day reading, sunbathing or dipping into the ocean at Southport. Stroll around Australia's southernmost accessible landmass at Cockle Creek and delight in a display of native flora.

Reserve some time to experience St Imre Vineyard. This popular getaway on the edge of Dover offers wine tastings and coffee. For a day of relaxation, drive to Ida Bay and stop by the Hastings thermal pools. This tension-melting warm water is sourced from nearby springs. Afterwards, visit Ida Bay Railway, the country's southernmost railway, or take a guided tour through the dim chambers of Hastings Caves.

Adamsons Peak’s impressive silhouette sits ever-present next to Dover, reminding visitors of the area's natural beauty. Climb to its summit for sweeping views of the town and surrounding scrublands. Look past Port Esperance and spot the bay's three islands, charmingly named Hope, Faith and Charity. The 15-kilometre (9-mile) Adamsons Peak hike takes around 4 hours.

No visit to Dover is complete without exploring Southwest National Park, its enormous neighbouring reserve. Drive down the Gordon River and Scotts Peak roads to enjoy magnificent views of this mountainous landscape. There is a fee to enter the national park.

Dover is a 75-minute drive from Hobart. Once in town, park the car and get around on foot.

Dover is a pretty, undisturbed part of Tassie. The drive to Cockle Creek was great. We would like to go back & explore some more.
