A traditional water fountain in a public square with a mosque in the background.
A nighttime street scene with a large golden spiral sculpture in the center, surrounded by traditional buildings and a mosque with a minaret.
A spice market with various spices displayed in wooden containers.
A bustling market street with traditional stalls, a man seated at a table, and people walking, including horse riders.
A dining table with various dishes, including a salad, hummus, and a plate with a stuffed chicken.

With fascinating combinations of old and new, this district is one of the most interesting places to explore in the exciting city of Doha.

Enjoy Islamic art, traditional marketplaces, serene parks and beautiful views when you visit Al Jasra. This central zone of Doha began about 100 years ago with the Souq Waqif, a place for Bedouin tribesmen to trade spices, livestock and pearls. Today’s marketplace maintains a traditional feel, with narrow labyrinthine alleys lined by small shops. Purchase textiles, culinary items and souvenirs or dine at an al fresco restaurant or café. At the market’s centre find Le Pouce, César Baldaccini’s large shiny bronze sculpture of a thumb.

The southern part of the market is the Souq Waqif Art Centre, which showcases Islamic and Middle Eastern art and offers art courses to the public. Spend time in the Gold Souq just east to select an exquisite piece in gold, silver or platinum or simply do some window-shopping.

Look for life-size sculptures of falcons marking the western part of the market, which is devoted to Qatar’s traditional sport of falconry. Walk through the narrow alleys of the Falcon Souq to see these shrewd hunting birds for sale, on their owners cuffed wrists or on perches in a sandpit waiting patiently while their owners meander through the souq. Attend a falcon auction and watch young boys shopping for their first falcons with their fathers.

Nearby, sleek Arabian stallions impress visitors at the Horse Stables while the Camel Pen often offers sightings of less elegant but very functional desert animals.

Walk just north of the market to Souq Waqif Park, the Pearl Monument and Doha Corniche.

Travel by car to Al Jasra from Hamad International Airport in about 20 minutes or arrive by public transportation in 45 minutes. Parking is available in spaces below Souq Waqif Park.

Stay at an international chain or boutique hotel in the area to be able to easily explore Al Jasra’s many attractions.

"As the Hotel is part of a group of 8. I think its important they let the client know where to drop of from a taxi as there have to take you to the hotel on their golf cart. Other than getting slightly lost due to not knowing the above, the rest was perfect and I would book this place again."
