Very conveniently placed for walking into Buxton but rooms are totally depressing. Our room, 304, had no working heating and no heating or heated towel rail in the small, cramped bathroom. The lift is grindingly slow. Breakfast was good however and staff friendly. So, convenient, but that's about all.

The whole experience was marred by the extremely uncomfortable bed. It was like sleeping on a wooden plank. It is a shame as the bedroom was spacious and very clean and tidy as was the bathroom. First impressions were poor, I think we drew the short straw with a receptionist who didn't even know the checkout time nor the parking arrangements so our first impression was second rate. The menu for available food reads more like a timetable. Certain foods between certain times e.g. no sandwiches after 5-30. No wonder foreigners think we are a joke. If you want a swim, non of the lockers work. Notice at the door reads if it's raining "please borrow a umbrella" instead of "AN umrella". Drinks menu reads "alcohol free larger" instead of "LAGER". Petty, perhaps but we may as well have it all. Like I said, it's a shame, as with a little attention it could be a wonderful hotel. As it is it's more like Fred Karno's circus. No return visit planned.

This place is old, run down, limited food, poor HVAC. Yes it is a "golden oldie". The only advantage is it is price competitive in this resort town- and it needs to be so to have any chance.

Another excellent stay at this beautiful period hotel. It’s like going back in time. The decor of the huge guest recreational areas is so calming, and the restoration of the historic past faultless. Food is of good quality but this area seems a little chaotic to the otherwise effortless running of the rest of the hotel. This is our second visit in March and will definitely be coming back. 👍

Public rooms very nicely decorated, bedroom (116) had its main decor revamped but was let down by some 'shabby' fitments. Main 'gripes' were that the evening meal menu outside the dining room bore no resemblence to the food on offer inside! Although the breakfast buffet was very good. Also, not happy about having to pay for car parking and wi-fi in rooms...

This is the second time I have stayed here and I like it. It has obviously been a grand place in the past and it retains some nice features. With a building like this it is difficult not to notice some little things that need attention. However I have had two of the best nights sleep ever when staying here. The bed was super comfortable and massive. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is extra but that wasn't a big deal and I have paid more for less in other places.

Stayed in room 167, tv not tuning into any channels. Phoned hotel up 3 times no answer. Went down to reception phoned again and it was only when i pressed the bell did a young lad came out the back saying he just heard it. He changed our room straight away to room 54. It took nearly 10 mins for hot water to come through to the bath. On the plus side tv was working. No wifi in room unless you pay, its 2024 move with the times! Expensive breakfast at £12 on the day you arrive or £15 the morning you decide to have it. Better to go 5 mins into Buxton and use a local cafe.

Was okay but a few things we were disappointed with: 1. WiFi is chargeable per day and you have to pay per device. That means every phone in your party. Since mobile reception was pretty poor in the area, this seemed cynical. 2. The gym was also extra (as were the rest of the health facilities) but the wording of the booking implies it is included (no mention of extra charges). 3. You have to request housekeeping. Whilst I understand this is probably to reduce waste and cost, would have been nice for the check-in team to point that out. Returning to your room in the evening to discover you are still out of the basics is a bit frustrating. The point is that those things are included in almost all other hotels so it’s a bit of a surprise and a gotcha.

This is a very grand old building and a really enjoyable place to stay. It has some areas that could do with a bit of mending and if that kind of thing is really important to you it might affect your view. I was in a standard double and the facilities were great the bed was very comfortable and massive. We had a meal in the evening which was very good and reasonably priced. The big plus was the staff. There were not very many in the hotel but they were very helpful and friendly. Overall an enjoyable stay in a grand old hotel that could do with some love. Again staff were a massive plus point. Well done guys.

I booked 4 nights as i was working close. The Monday night...no sleep in till 23.45..the music was a piss take..the staff was having a party i was told..i told the staff the next day. Ask to be .ived rooms. They told me it would not happen again... the Wednesday night. It happened again. I will never stay there again ..

Firstly the room was like a prison room it’s just plain white with marks all over the walls and it has not been decorated for years !! Then there is the lack of spa the whole reason we booked we tried numerous times to book with the spa and nothing ! The staff at the hotel was not helpful with this at all! The leisure facilities were unclean and smelly was not worth the 6 pounds and we only spent 15 mins in there as the pool was freezing! The best part about the hotel was the entrance! Then everything else was downhill from there! The best way to describe it is the tower of terror !

Great Hotel and short stay
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, room was clean and the place looked like it had been refurbished recently. We didn’t eat there as only there for 2 nights and came to visit the many pubs and excellent eateries in Buxton. We will certainly be booking again.

Great location the rest is average at best
Hotel was in a fantastic location and the communal areas are very grand. The bedrooms are tired but ok. The temperature is ridiculously hot and could not turn the radiator down in the end opened the bedroom. Getting a drink wasn’t easy lots of staff but no one around. Had to pay to use the ‘spa’ facilities but really not very nice would not bother in future.

The standard double room we booked was tiny. I was told the cheaper compact room was the same but without a window. We stayed in room 175 and the smell from the drains was awful. The breakfast was good except for the sausages. The tables were large communal which wasn’t a problem for us. The building itself is stunning with lots of character.

We love Buxton anyway and got a good offer for this hotel. The hotel is very grand and comfortable in all public areas, however our room and particularly the hard uncomfortable bed let it down. We'd definitely look to book again but would try to upgrade to a better room.

Awful. Generally I dont like to complain, but our stay was so bad that I feel its only fair to warn others in advance. Dog hairs all over the room, and on the bed sheets. A radiator that was draining water and made a loud grinding noise all night. Poor service at reception. Then we messaged the hotel who effectively just palmed us off. Very poor.

We decided to stay at the hotel for Christmas Eve and Day as a break on our journey to see my parent and brother. The hotel is a stunning building especially in and around the reception and communal areas. As you get further from those areas the standard begins to slip with worn carpets and padlocked hasps on some doors. The worst thing is the totally inadequate staffing which was commented on by many of the holidayers on a number of coach parties starting there. The Christmas dinner was poor. Much of the food had been pre par cooked and just finished off for serving resulting in leathery roast potatoes and sirloin steak, the latter the dog enjoyed as it was inedible. Considering the meal had to be pre-ordered (and paid for in advance) and the time was stipulated by the hotel, it took 2.5 hours before we had eaten everything with a very long time between each coarse. Even then they hadn't removed the plates from the previous course before bringing out the next course. This was because there were far too few staff to deal with the number of diners and many were clearly inexperienced. That is clearly a management issue. Although I may be wrong I suspect the kitchen was too small to accommodate so many diners at once, hence the long delays but again it is a management problem. I highlighted the fact that doors marked fire doors did not open in the direction of escape (advised practice for most circumstances) and the manager started arguing with me Fawlty Palace!

Not What I expected, disappointing
Though we were told check in was 4.00pm, as we had travelled from Southern England we asked if we could get into our room, no, we had to wait 1.5 hours! Room only had two plug sockets available, none near where I wished to use my laptop. You had two pay £7.00 each to use the wifi in the room!!! The room was right at the back of the hotel, five minutes walk from reception. On the plus side the room was clean. The breakfast was good. I would not recommend this hotel.

Nice hotel for a short break
Stayed here before, albeit 13 years ago, but we knew what to expect and the price we paid reflects it. It's a beautiful hotel, well positioned in Buxton. It's clean, it's quiet, the breakfast was perfect and the room was clean. The only thing I didn't like was the comfort of the bed but that's down to the individual rather than a fault of the hotel. Would deffo stay here again.

The room had really old furniture, really needs updating. Nothing luxury about the place at all. The bathroom is standard, power of the shower was no good. The spa centre is just a standard pool, no jacuzzi. Sauna room wasnt working. Just an awful experience its not what it shows u online pictures.
