Hotel is a little warn but lovely historical building. Good breakfast and staff were excellent.. especially the lovely spoken lady on the front desk who was very helpful.

Not a good hotel experience
I paid £60 a night ( B&B) for a very small, dimly lit room with curtains that wouldn’t shut/open properly and a torn blind. The room was of a poor standard and in dire need of doing up and a refurb. The fixtures and fittings were old and only added to the gloom about the place. The lavatory wasn’t entirely clean, and nor was the bath. Whilst the receptionist who dealt with me, and the lady who served breakfast , were polite, there was otherwise nothing favourable about my stay in this hotel. The bedding didn’t feel fresh and so made for uncomfortable sleeping. I would never stay in this hotel again and would not recommend it.

Please don't let this building go to waste
The hotel is in an impressive historic building with some great features and everywhere was clean. However, the property needs a handyman, and quickly. Paint peeling off the ceiling, holes in the wall from old fixtures not filled in, no heating, no working lifts spoil what could be an excellent hotel. If a bit of money was spent on it now, it will save spending a lot more soon. The free breakfast was very good. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Especially Ishmail, who gave us a quick tour of the lounge and features. Overall, great building in a good location with great staff, let down by a lack of investment.

Stay before and it’s been ok but this time Door stuck had a job getting out of room Sink an bath filled up with water took ages to go down No heating , portable didn’t work Curtains falling off rail No hair dryer in room , lack of towels, coffee cups Rubbish under desk For the money you pay you shouldn’t have all these issues

Lovely looking building and online looks to have good features. Disappointed when arrived lift didn't work, lights in bath and tv in bathroom nor working. key to room not working so had to keep going up and down stairs. empty bottle left in fridge and breakfast was basic.

This is not a standard by-the-numbers modern hotel. The hotel is finely decorated with many beautiful features, but a little worn round the edges and some areas of the hotel seem to need maintenance (the lift was also out of order). We got a very big room for the night, with two separate sleeping areas, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Parking is tricky, as the hotel has very limited parking itself, so we had to use a (close-by) public car park. The location is in the Cathedral Quarter of Derby (we could see the cathedral from our room) so very convenient for access to the centre of Derby.

No aircon, little interest from staff in this. Didn’t see a heater under the desk so spent the night freezing. Struggled with bags, offered help after I got down the steps. Would not stay again until they fixed the heating issue.

No complaints about cleanliness. No plug in the Bath. Shower/bath tap controls lacked any signage or instructions. No marmalade at breakfast! Lift not working. Men’s toilet in foyer out of order. Staff always charming and helpful. Mattress the softest I have ever slept on which did my back in. Room was cramped for two.

I had a good stay. My room was not super clean (little bits of plastic wrapper and sequins on the floor, presumably from the previous guest, and a couple of spiders in the ensuite). But it was very comfy and quiet, despite the hotel being very central. Breakfast was good, the building is beautiful and staff were really lovely.

Hotel generally good although room wasn't cleaned or bed made on last full day despite the Green Light being activated. Also thanks to the Receptionist we were provided clean cups and milk as well.

Service was good. Generally, staff have been friendly and helpful. We understand making ends meet is a task for everybody everywhere globally, nowadays. Perhaps due to eco-friendly and energy cost balancing, elevator was not in use. As an overseas traveller with 15kg+ luggage with bad knees walking up all the way to the top floor was a good heavy training exercise. Lighting inside room was also on the very eco-conservative side. There was air-conditioned switch in the room which was not connected. The windows were a bit aged and worn. Hopefully, as overall post-covid economic atmosphere picks up and recovers, the hardware facilities to this lovely treasure gem will be revived and enlivened in due course.

Sad to see such a decline
I recently celebrated a milestone anniversary at this hotel, where I once worked during its prime. Back then, it boasted high standards with an excellent restaurant, sommelier, and cocktail bar. Sadly, our recent experience was disappointing. We were met with an empty lobby and waited, alone, for 15 minutes for check-in. Our room had issues: dusty surroundings, a faulty mattress, and a damaged jacuzzi. Breakfast was lackluster in a beautiful yet lifeless room. The coffee had grounds, and simple requests were denied. One guest's meal was forgotten and arrived late. Check-out was handled by an inattentive staff member in casual attire, smelling of smoke/vape. I regret recommending this place to my wife and friends. The Holiday Inn would've been a better choice.

It’s a stunning hotel with so much potential to be something really special. The room was basic, clean but lacked enough towels, no dressing gowns, no slippers, no batteries in the remote. Breakfast was ok, but not enough experienced staff to deal with guests. The hotel needs an experienced manager and a lick of paint to elevate the tired looking corridors. Even the brass needs cleaning. The king size bed was two singles pushed together which left an annoying gap. The church bells rang every hour and half hour throughout the night which was a nightmare for light sleepers. Obviously, not the hotels fault but it’s worth knowing. The hotel is in a great position with parking round the corner. All in all, I’d stay again, but it could of been 10/10 if the hotel was run by experienced staff.

From check in to breakfast… a nightmare. I checked with reception on the Wednesday to ensure all rooms were allocated. Check in was a nightmare, there was an early check in, as we were going to a wedding. They hadn’t any recollection of this. I was first down to breakfast our group had eaten there’s before I had mine. I waited over a hour for my breakfast. Lovely surroundings, other than that total chaos.

Check in awful, booked six rooms for an early check in for a wedding. Even though I confirmed names and check in time the Wednesday before. Wedding guests were told they couldn’t check in and there wasn’t a room for the sixth guest. Sorted after a stressful time for myself … ( Mother of the Groom) Breakfast wasn’t any better .. I was the first down out of our party and the last to get breakfast after a hours wait, a saucer of scrambled egg was bought out. An irate chef asked what my problem was, when my husband explained he was rude. Not a good experience !!

Arrived to be told that my booking was cancelled as they were oversold. I did not receive a notification from hotels.com, so they said if I came back in 40 minutes they would find me a room. The room was cleaned, but not stocked with toiletries, and only one tea bag. The shower gel tube from the previous occupant was still on the floor in the shower, so the room cleaning wasn't thorough. The WiFi didn't work, so I had to use my 4G. Room was too hot, so I had to have the window open all night and there was a noise coming from an air-conditioner outside. Breakfast was ok, but overall everything looked a bit tired and worn.

Location is perfect as it's in town, easy access to city centre and lots to do. Dinning/breakfast room was beautiful and welcoming. Parking down the road but i was lucky to park in front of the hotel for free, thanks to the night staff at reception. Arrival: Not too smooth as I had only booked room/accommodation an hour before arrival. I was not given WiFi information and couldn't call, as there was no phone in the room. The bed was beautifully made, but it was a challenge to keep the bed in place (maybe a rug or heavier bedstead would help), so I didn't sleep too well. Air-conditioning wasn't working, but I had a fan in the room. Some of the floor parquet was loose in a few places. Shower good. Facility in room great, you can have lots of tea and coffee, and they even left 2x bottles of water (excellent touch). Breakfast: I arrived about 20 minutes before the end of breakfast, and I finally took my breakfast order 15 mins later (friendly staff member). Breakfast was good, and it was tasty. Quantity just right, presentation was good. Checkout: I asked for a later checkout, and the staff member was accommodating and polite (I called reception via my mobile phone). Forty-five minutes after checkout time, I checked out. On the way out, I asked for a glass of ice and was met with an absolute "No"! Unsure why there was no ice in such a large hotel at almost 12 noon, but I wasn't given a reason, so said my "thank you" and left.

Hotel on the decline
Clearly states air conditioning in room. It was the hottest day of the year and air conditioning has been broken for months apparently. No towels in room on check in. The hotel is clearly understaffed. What was I’m sure once an elegant and desirable hotel is quickly on the decline and is definitely not 4 star. The breakfast was nice apart from that sadly it’s not as desirable as I’m sure it once was. I will not return
