The Riviera Maya, in Mexico’s Quintana Roo State, has a huge diversity of native animals and this interactive zoo allows you to get closer than you could imagine to many of these wonderful creatures.Over 400 animals from 40 separate species are housed here at Crococun Zoo and on your visit you’ll get the opportunity to pet and feed many exotic creatures such as hairless Mayan dogs, spider monkeys and even a boa constrictor. The highlight for many visitors however is the walk through a den of crocodiles – but have no fear, they’re only babies!Crococun was formerly a commercial crocodile farm but after a devastating hurricane season in 1988 it changed its function to the conservation and protection of the large reptiles and other endangered indigenous species. The inside of the zoo can only be seen on one of the guided tours included in the price of admission, which take around an hour. You’ll be led along a winding trail past the various animal enclosures and your trained guide will demonstrate exactly how to safely and comfortably touch, hold and feed a number of animals. You are, however, required to purchase the food to feed the animals. The tours run continuously throughout the day and, depending on visitor numbers, you generally won’t have to wait more than 20 minutes for yours to leave. It’s advisable to bring plenty of water with you as it can get quite hot under the canopy. There are designated areas to rest after the tour, although you’re not permitted to wander through the zoo without a guide.Crococun Zoo, which is open daily, is 31 kilometres from Cancun in the Riviera Maya and can be reached by bus from the main bus station.
