With its pink coral, ground to a soft, fine powder and towering cliffs protecting a sheltered cove and a reef out to sea breaking the waves, Crane Beach is 400 metres of pure paradise. If a photographer had to capture all the natural beauty of Barbados in one frame, Crane Beach would be the ultimate location.Phenomenal sunrises start the day at one of the most romantic places in the world, as the sky turns from milky turquoise through bright pinks and golds, illuminating the Caribbean sea. Spend a day here in paradise as you walk in the tranquil peace of dawn, swim in the protected shallow waters or ride the gentle waves on a bodyboard. At the top of the 15-metre-high cliff, the majestic seascape views from the 19th century Crane Resort make a perfect romantic spot for honeymooners. The resort is dotted with outdoor infinity pools and Jacuzzis, and some of the individual rooms have their own luxurious, private pools.Even if you’re not staying at the Crane Resort, it’s definitely worth paying to go to the top of the cliff for the astounding views over the ocean and to appreciate the artistry of the oldest resort in Barbados. Grandeur and luxury sit side-by-side with exquisite natural beauty here. There’s a statue of British ballet dancer David Wall, leaping gracefully in the gardens against the backdrop of the rolling waves, and for a real taste of luxury, enjoy drinks at the veranda of Bar 1887 or sushi or Thai cuisine at the restaurant – make sure you dress for the occasion. The beach’s name betrays the elegance of the place, hinting at its industrial past. Once upon a time, this stretch of coast was a busy, commercial harbour. The cranes which loaded and unloaded boats have long since gone but the name remains. Now it’s a slice of paradise. Just a 15-minute drive from the airport, or half an hour from Bridgetown, there’s every reason to spend the day here.
