Founded in the late 17th century, this historic west-coast town is much beloved for its gorgeous seaside sunsets, its charming colonial architecture, and its picturesque cobblestone streets.

Walking down the cobbled streets of Colonia del Sacramento, you may get the feeling you have slipped into a world of the past. This town, which was founded in 1680 and lays claim to being the oldest settlement in Uruguay, has its deep colonial history written into the landscape. Tour the town’s numerous museums and aquarium, climb its historic lighthouse, and savour the langourous atmosphere on its beautiful waterfront.

When it was first established, Colonia del Sacramento changed hands between the Spanish and the Portuguese, fighting off raids from the British as well. In 1828, it finally became part of independent Uruguay. Explore the town’s twinned heritage at its two colonial museums: the Museo Portugués, dedicated to the Portuguese influence, and the Spanish-oriented Museo Español. One ticket, available from the Museo Municipal, covers entry to all the town’s museums.

Take a leisurely walk around the Barrio Histórico (Historic Centre), a charming walled area with UNESCO World Heritage status. Here the cobblestone streets are lined with pastel-coloured Spanish and Portuguese houses. Stroll down Calle de los Suspiros, a particularly fetching street that remains mostly intact in its 18th century form.

Several streets converge on the town square, the tree-shaded Plaza Mayor. Don’t miss the nearby Portón de Campo, a town gate that was erected in 1745 by the Portuguese.

For a different perspective on the city, head to the coast and climb to the top of the Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse. At 27 metres (89 feet) high, you will enjoy uninterrupted views of the town and surrounds, and on a clear day you can see across the river to Buenos Aires. Continue down along the waterfront, following the old town wall and passing ruined fortifications from the 1700s. You will arrive at the city marina, a lovely place to have a picnic and enjoy the sunset.

Colonia del Sacramento is 2.5 hours by car from Montevideo and 1 hour by boat from Buenos Aires. To explore areas beyond the historic centre, rent a golf buggy or a bicycle. Car rental is recommended for longer journeys. Head just north of town to see the Plaza de Toros bullring and relax on river beaches.
