Idyllic beaches, quaint fishing villages, ancient ruins and dramatic mountains make this one of the most alluring areas of Italy’s Campania region.

Countless beaches, ancient Greek palaces, exquisite cuisine and lively festivals welcome visitors to the picturesque region of Cilento. Much of Cilento lies within the Parco Nazionale del Cilento, situated toward Italy’s southern Campania region. Explore Cilento’s miles of glorious coastline and rugged mountains, which shelter a mix of enchanting villages, natural beauty and rustic charm.

The area’s Mediterranean coastline has everything from white-sand beaches to hidden swimming holes and old fishing communities. Follow zigzagging medieval streets to the shoreline of Santa Maria di Castellabate. Explore the blue-water caves of Palinuro and secret bays of Scario, accessible by boat only. Experience time-honored fishing traditions at Acciaroli and Marina di Pisciotta.

Discover the region’s interior of verdant countryside and towering mountains via hiking, horseback riding and rafting trips. Marvel at the deep canyons and limestone cliffs of Gole del Calore. Find trails leading to the summits of Monte Cervati and Monte Gelbison, which afford uninterrupted views over Cilento. Walk amid giant stalagmites and stalactites in the ancient grottos of Castelcivita and Pertosa.

Cilento’s history is quite interesting. Find three well-preserved Greek temples in Paestum, a town established by Greeks in the 6th century B.C. Check out the millennia-old archaeological ruins of Velia and the mountainside vestiges of Mercato San Servino. Visit the architecturally impressive Certosa di San Lorenzo monastery in Padula.

Enjoy Cilento’s world-famous cuisine, typical of the Mediterranean diet. Sample some of Italy’s best buffalo mozzarella, white figs introduced by Greek ancestors and delicious soppressata di Gioi (lean salami). Be part of a traditional sagra, a festival that celebrates local food, wine and folkloric music. Lively events take place at inland hamlets such as Novi Velia, Perito and Stio.

Public buses, trains and a summer boat service connect Cilento’s major towns and villages with Naples and Salerno. Rent a car and enjoy the freedom of discovering this fascinating destination at your own pace. You’ll find a range of accommodation options, so you can linger in this stunning and romantic setting.

"Elegant hotel but busy with weddings and parties. Pool was closed for a couple of hours in the afternoon, during the hottest time of the day. "Nice staff, good pool, opportunity for kayaking and pedalo boats. Nice local area. The loud night time shows could be a problem (9 to 12pm), in this case get one of the huts further up the hill. The phone app is a good idea, but would be fantastic if it was also in other languages (not just ..."
