We loved staying at the Nicolas. The room was so cozy and comfortable and the lobby was equipped with seltzer and snacks. Great location but off the main drag so the hotel was very quiet.
What a wonderful place to stay. Clean and cute restored building. Wonderful lobby area for snacks and drinks or to just sit & relax. There is a cute large porch for sitting as well. Very close to the College of Charleston campus. Parking can be a bit tricky but we did get very lucky on our stay. You can walk anywhere in the downtown area and it is very safe. So many shops and dining options very nearby. We look forward to staying again on our next trip to Charleston.
Our stay at The Nicholas was absolutely wonderful!
The room was beautiful — perfectly decorated in a classic Southern style, elegant yet cozy, with so much attention to detail. We loved the concept of being completely independent, without a traditional front desk, yet everything worked flawlessly. The check-in and check-out process was super easy, and we never had a single issue.
The room and bathroom were spotless, and everything felt fresh and well cared for.
Breakfast was such a pleasant surprise — they offered delicious egg sandwiches (beautifully packed!), a great variety of fresh fruit, and bottled water. It was a grab-and-go breakfast, but presented in a very elegant room that made it feel special.
The location couldn’t be better — right in the heart of Charleston, walking distance to shops, galleries, and all the main attractions.
We honestly had such a great time and will definitely return soon.
Highly recommend this charming and stylish place for anyone who wants to experience Charleston with comfort and authenticity. 🌿
We loved the pool and the location. The house was beautiful and our room was too. However, the listing on Expedia says there is “free” offsite parking 0.3 miles away. When we arrived the spots on the property were full so I took the parking suggestion sent in my guidebook and headed to the 34 St Phillips Street Parking Garage. When I got there I found out that parking was in fact not free, but $1 per 20 minutes with a maximum of $24. I was willing to pay this, but was disappointed because I booked The Nicholas partially because of the free parking.
The room was over $500 a night. For that we found the following:
1. The air conditioner split in the wall was filthy. Black sooty gunk right where the air comes out.
2. The toilet paper holder was falling off the wall so we used the spare loose roll that was on a table.
3. Not enough hooks in the bath so we pulled in a small side table to hold the towels.
4. The charger system did not work that was on a table.
5. There was NO ROD TO HANG CLOTHES. For over $500 a night. There was an old crooked armoire with shelves and loose hangers lying flat on a shelf. I hung my clothing outside the armoire hanging off it's crown molding.
6.The continental breakfast was not maintained or manned.
7. There was no milk for coffee.
8. Several bike locks were broken.
9. One bike had a flat tire that I discovered half a block away.
10. The bike my husband used squeaked so badly that we bought a can of WD40 in town to use on the bike.
11. Finally, a sad, pathetic small horrible and weird fake painting over the fireplace.
Great location, clean sheets, completely and utterly run-down. Would never ever recommend it.
It has a pretty design and it's more quiet and private than most hotels. They had snacks and an easy going feeling which was nice. We had a little trouble getting into the room initially, but they replied fast enough. I found that the email greetings they sent could be streamlined and more concise. I kept having to go back and check for the codes for various doors like the pool, etc. It may be better to have the codes texted.
The room was beautiful and the bed was very comfortable. When I got my message from them, the door code was blank so I had to call but got my code immediately when I called. There is no staff onsite. The building is very old so it's charming but unless you were running the heat 100% of the time, it got very cold! The heater has a bright light on it to tell you what temp it is which was not great for sleeping. Very charming but a little bumpy getting in.
We loved The Nicholas! Spacious room and bathroom! Loved the porch and the location is unmatched. We’ll be back!

Liked: Cleanliness, amenities
Great location near downtown Charlestown. Hotel is a cute, historic building, in need of some TLC (lots of peeling paint). Limited parking onsite (3 spaces). Room was very large and bright, but strangely had not a single chair in the room, even though there was loads of empty space. Also, no cup/glass for water--not even plastic cups. Final gripe was in the breakfast area. There were paper to go cups for coffee--but no lids for the cups. Staff is completely remote--did not see anyone during our 2-day stay.
Our room was lovely—charmingly updated and attractively appointed. Felt like staying as a guest in someone’s home. So convenient, we walked to everything! Did not see a single staff person, but we didn’t lack for anything so wasn’t an issue for us.
Mattress firm to the extreme and not level. No on-site baggage storage. No on-site management (which meant management was not aware the smoke detectors were wired in and were being tested by a technician on on property rather than ringing due to batteries needing to be replaced).
Not a true b&b in that there were only boxed meals to go.
