History:

Gilbert’s Hill farm is the birthplace of downhill skiing in America — it is the site of the country’s first ski rope tow. This special place is both a State Historic Site and on the National Register of Historic Places.

Recently renovated, the Gilbert’s Hill cottage (ski lodge) was built in 1936 as a place for skiers to warm by the fire, eat, drink and socialize between runs on the most popular ski hill in the country. It housed a sandwich bar, ski school and ski rental shop. Dozens of Olympic skiers got their start training at Gilbert’s Hill and the famed Austrian skier and instructor, Sig Buchmayr, directed the ski school. After the ski tow closed in the early 1950s the structure was converted into a home for Clinton Gilbert’s son and his war bride from France. Our recent renovation retained the cottage’s historic layout and as much of the original materials possible (pine paneling, flooring, bathroom tub, kitchen cabinets, etc).

The Gilbert’s Hill cottage is a one-of-kind vacation rental — 100% of the proceeds from your stay support the restoration and maintenance of this National landmark.

Location:

Gilbert’s Hill is centrally located with easy access to the best Vermont has to offer — Woodstock Village is repeatedly voted one of the most beautiful towns in America.

- We neighbor Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park with its miles of carriage paths and hiking trails, acres of woods and ponds.
- 2 miles to Appalachian Trail National Park access (gorgeous views)

- Two miles to Woodstock town center with quaint shops, restaurants, bars, the town hall theater, town green, historic architecture
- Minutes to Long Trail Brewery, Harpoon Brewery (and other award-winning craft brewers nearby)
- 1 mile to Billings Farm & Museum and minutes to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (outstanding activities for families/kids)
- Nationally-recognized dairy operations nearby (Ben & Jerry’s, Vermont Farmstead Cheese Co., Plymouth Artisan Cheese, etc)
- Dozens of covered bridges, authentic villages, historic general stores, small town libraries, museums and country fairs less than an hour’s drive.

** Please contact the owners: we’re happy to share our private, guest website with a comprehensive visitors’ guide to the best local activities (amazing farm-to-table restaurants, iconic general stores, wineries, craft breweries, nostalgic farmer’s markets, etc.) plus expanded information on the property and local history. **

Fantastic!
My mother and I stayed at Howard and Mary Margret's home during a New England road trip. I was very excited to stay after seeing the pictures of the property when I booked the home. When we arrived, I was even more excited. Everything was perfect and Howard and Mary Margret were the nicest people. Thank you for your hospitality and kindness.

Cozy, Cute and Comfy!
We felt so at home! The little house is so lovely with all the historic touches and ski memorabilia. So charming!!! Had a nostalgic soak in the claw foot tub. (I grew up with a similar tub as a child- minus the fancy shower wand!) The location is fantastic and quiet. The weather was not friendly- it rained and rained. but it didn’t stop us from doing any of the things we had planned during our stay. It just means that we are looking forward to coming back and spending more time exploring the property! Maybe next time when the wildflowers are blooming! Lovely hosts kept in touch and made sure we had everything we needed! It was a fantastic birthday weekend! We can’t wait to return!

The best part of our vacation was staying at Gilbert’s Hill. The hosts thought of every possible amenity. The property was unique, historical, and beautiful. It had all the charm of the past but all modern convenience. Close to Woodstock and other quaint nearby towns. The hosts were very timely in their communications. We’ll be back.

The Warming Hut is a wonderful gem in the Woodstock area. It is beautifully restore and very comfortable. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and taking in the wonderful scenery. The walls of the hut are filled with photos showing the history of the ski hut. We will certainly return to the Warming Hut in the future.

Don’t let the secret out.
This is one of those rare gems that exceeds every expectation that you have. There were no disappointments. Green views out every window, fire flies after dark, super cozy beds, everything you needed in the kitchen, plenty of space to spread out at the table if you need to open the laptop. This place was excellent in every way, and made our visit to Woodstock one of the most memorable yet. We hope to return someday as it already feels like a home away from home.

A wonderful stay!
The cottage was perfect for me. It was charming and well-equipped. The setting was lovely, at the base of a ski slope filled with wildflowers and butterflies. "Downtown" Woodstock is a 5-minute drive away, but the cottage is quiet, with great night skies if you are lucky with the weather.

A historic and cozy stay close to Woodstock!
A wonderful week in Woodstock, VT made all the better by this cozy & historic chalet at the base of Gilbert Hill with kind & welcoming hosts! The property is nicely located outside of town, sits amidst multiple vineyards, and serves as a good base for local hiking. The property met all of our needs with a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable bedding, & Netflix for our son. With the all the aforementioned amenities, the historic nature of the property was not lost. We loved the original knotty pine paneling and a decor that highlighted the properties rich past. Our stay was restful and enjoyable on so many levels! We would like to again thank Howard and Mary Margaret for serving as excellent hosts and making our week together a memorable one!

Charming Cottage with Interesting History
We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing stay at this former “Warming Hut”! The cottage is cozy and comfortable, beautifully updated while preserving its charm and connection to its interesting history with displayed memorabilia. Our hosts were welcoming and gracious, easily accessible, and provided thoughtful touches, including fresh flowers to greet us upon arrival. The property is immaculate, inside and out, and had all that we needed for a comfortable stay. We enjoyed the extensive well-maintained grounds, walking the mowed paths to access magnificent views of the vineyards, wildflowers, and distant landscapes. With this picturesque setting as our home base, we took several day trips to explore the nearby national forests, state parks, and lakes to hike and kayak, and found ready access to local farm markets and grocery stores to restock as needed. What a peaceful setting to enjoy quiet mornings and lovely sunsets on the back deck as we shared the tranquil landscape with the birds and butterflies! Thank you, Howard and Mary Margaret, for welcoming us to your beautiful property and for sharing this historic place with us!

Perfect Fall Getaway
The renovated warming hut at Gilbert’s Hill was clean, decorated beautifully with connection to its past, comfortable, and located a few steps from an AT connector trail. We hiked, biked and explored, all from the cottage door. The owners Howard and Mary Margaret were excellent hosts, check in and out and communication was easy and it was obvious they cared about the land and the preservation of the national landmark (Gilbert’s Hill), as well as ensuring that we had a wonderful stay.

Next time we'd like to stay longer! Cottage was lovely, roomy and immaculate, with everything we needed. Spent lots of time on the deck reading and enjoying the vineyard view, complete with butterflies :) Hiked the trails right off the property, which were more beautiful and extensive than we'd expected. Soooo much to explore in the area--hiking, food, art. Howard was an amazing host with lots of great suggestions. Drove off feeling like we'd made a new friend. Thanks so much, Howard!

Cozy, comfortable cottage on farm near Woodstock
The former 'Warming Hut,' now beautifully restored 2 BR Cottage, is in a beautiful location surrounded by fields, flowers and grape vines. As comfortable as the inside was, to be able to walk out the door and up the hill (where the 1st ski lift was built) to view this valley just north of Woodstock was such a treat. The cabin was spotlessly clean, and everything I needed for a delightful vacation was provided. The owners were very accessible and helpful. Thank you, I look forward to returning!
