This remarkable example of Roman architecture in the Piazza dei Miracoli is one of the most important cultural sites in Italy.

The Cathedral of Pisa (Duomo di Pisa) is one of the most iconic buildings in Italy, alongside the Leaning Tower. It is the central structure of Pisa’s Piazza dei Miracoli and continues to be an active church.

Take a walk around the cathedral to get a sense of how big it is. Buscheto, the Italian architect who designed the Duomo, is buried as an honorarium in one of the blind arches that line the marble façade.

The first stone of this large cathedral was laid in 1093. This was the beginning of Pisan-Romanesque architecture. Now, more than 1,000 years later, this is a distinctive architectural style throughout Tuscany, thanks to the popularity of the Duomo.

Near the Leaning Tower is the bronze Door of San Ranieri. Enter the nave and walk along the marble floors that lead to the pulpit. The famous sculptor Giovanni Pisano, known as “the first modern sculptor”, created the pulpit. In 1595, a fire destroyed many of the medieval artworks that were on the walls of the Duomo. Today, there is a mixed collection of medieval and Renaissance art.

Go to the altar to admire the colossal 13th-century mosaic that adorns the apse and see sculptor Giambologna’s crucifix. Notice the two bronze angels that mark the entrance to the choir.

During the Sunday mass, a 38-piece choir sings hymns. Listen to the voices ring out under the Duomo’s domed roof and enjoy this breathtaking experience.

The Duomo is situated on the border of Pisa’s medieval centre in the Piazza dei Miracoli. It is accessible on foot or by bus from most areas of the city. For those driving or arriving from outside the city, secure parking is available for a fee a 5-minute walk from the square, on Via Pietrasantina.

The Duomo is open daily. There is an entrance fee. To get a discount, purchase a multi-attraction ticket that offers admission to other attractions in the Piazza dei Miracoli.
