Visit one of South Africa’s oldest hot spring resorts to enjoy spa treatments and country fairs, hiking trails, nature and wildlife.

Famous for its hot springs, flower garden and birdlife, the small town of Caledon is set against the backdrop of the Swartberg mountain range in South Africa’s Overberg region. You’ll also find a museum, historical sites and hiking trails that traverse the foothills of the nearby mountains.

One of Caledon’s biggest attractions is its seven springs, discovered hundreds of years ago by the Khoi-Khoi indigenous people. The waters are free of organic matter and warmed by contact with rocks that are heated by pressure deep underground. Come here to enjoy the springs and spa treatments at the Caledon Spa.

Learn about local history at the Caledon Museum, which is set in a Victorian house and a former masonic lodge. Artefacts donated by Caledon’s residents from the 1800's give an insight into everyday life in times past. Stroll along Mill Street, the town’s first residential street, and Plein Street to spot Cape Dutch and Victorian-era buildings. Among these are the Town Hall and Dutch Reformation Church.

Visit the Caledon Wildflower Garden, which is home to a picturesque display of daisy fields, indigenous trees and over 135 species of protea flowers. Bring a picnic and relax on the garden’s lawns while enjoying views across the Overberg region. Hike the 6-mile (10-kilometre) trail that leads into the Swartberg mountain range. Keep an eye out for birdlife, such as the blue crane and cape sugarbird.

Visit the town in September when the Caledon Country Fair showcases aspects of rural life. Browse the stalls offering everything from flowers and wine to cheese and handicrafts. See sheep-shearing demonstrations and dog shows and watch traditional Xhosa dance performances.

Caledon is about 70 miles (113 kilometres) east of Cape Town. Rent a car to get here and enjoy the freedom to explore other towns in the Overberg region. Alternatively, several bus companies operate a service to and from Cape Town.

Terrible. Dirty
Poor quality rooms. Bathroom doors are rotten and carpets are stained. Room 206 had a smell similar to a public hospital. The beds are soft and over used.
