Similar to many of Calpe’s beaches, the 1,090-feet (332-metre) Peñón de Ifach rock dominates the views. However, the designs of the multiple award-winning Ricardo Bofill succeed in distracting your eyes from the natural landmark.
Admire the Muralla Roja, a modern apartment block inspired by the styles of the ancient Arab buildings of the Mediterranean and the casbah citadels of North Africa. Note the fortress-like towers, interlocking stairs and connecting bridges. The vivid red and blue colour scheme complements the hues of the rugged coastline and sky.
Opposite is the Edificio Xanadu, an experimental lofted garden city. It features protruding cubic sections with concave roofs. Pay attention to how its shape resembles that of the Peñón de Ifach. Cala Manzanera is just a short drive from central Calpe. There are two scenic routes to get here on foot. One is to walk along the coastline from Arenal-Bol Beach. The other is to follow a clifftop path that passes in front of the Bofill buildings.
