While Calas itself is a unique village, the best areas that offer a similar experience in Provence, with a focus on quality and convenience, are Aix-en-Provence and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.Aix-en-Provence, often called the "City of a Thousand Fountains," is a larger town with a refined feel. Its historic centre is very walkable, with elegant boulevards like the Cours Mirabeau lined with plane trees, cafes, and boutiques. You'll find a wide selection of high-end accommodation, excellent dining, and cultural attractions, including museums and art galleries. For couples, Aix-en-Provence is an excellent choice. The town offers a sophisticated setting for romantic strolls, enjoying meals at Michelin-starred restaurants, and exploring the local markets. It also provides easy access to the surrounding countryside for day trips to vineyards and lavender fields.Saint-Rémy-de-Provence offers a more village-like experience, akin to Calas, but with a more developed tourism infrastructure. It's known for its Roman ruins, including the Arc de Triomphe and the Mausoleum of the Julii, and its connection to Vincent van Gogh, who painted many of his famous works here. The town centre is compact and pleasant, with narrow streets, artisan shops, and many welcoming restaurants.Families will find Saint-Rémy-de-Provence particularly appealing. The town's manageable size means everything is within easy reach, and there are plenty of open spaces for children, like the Parc Naturel Régional des Alpilles, which is great for walks and picnics.
