Dresden’s river promenade is the perfect destination for dining and taking in the city’s stunning architecture during a twilight stroll.

Lining the bank of the Elbe River, Bruehl’s Terrace is one of the most picturesque pedestrian promenades in Saxony. Studded with major historic attractions and a wealth of cafés and restaurants, the terrace offers a fantastic afternoon out for the whole family. Admire the sunset reflected on the river as you stroll or admire neo-Baroque architecture as you take in the sites.

Raised high above the river, the terrace was originally part of the city’s fortress walls. Today its elevation provides some of the best views of the river and a wide promenade. Begin your exploration at Schlossplatz, at the western end of the terrace. Discover the fortress beneath your feet as you visit the brick gate that was once the entrance to the Saxon residence. Walk past the Supreme Court of Saxony to admire the four statues outside its doors.

Experience the fervor of student life at the Academy of Fine Arts. Dating back to the late 19th century, the academy is still active and many classes take place daily. Stop at a waterfront café to enjoy coffee and light snacks. In winter, shelter from the cold with a glass of mulled wine, a German favorite.

Continue along the terrace to see major historic sites including the neo-Baroque Sekundogenitur and the Albertinum, home to an impressive collection of Rodin sculptures. Enjoy a break in leafy Bruehl’s Garden opposite the Albertinum before finishing your stroll with a visit to the New Synagogue, an award-winning feat of modern architecture.

Return at dusk for one of the best vantage points to watch the sun set over Dresden. Bring a camera to capture the moment before finding a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Bruehl’s Terrace can be visited daily and there is no fee for admission, however many of the attractions along the way have entrance fees. Reach the terrace’s western end via tram or bus via Schlossplatz or from the Synogogue tram stops at the eastern point.
