About this property
Entire place
You'll have the entire cabin to yourself and will only share it with other guests in your party.
Kayak or canoe across to historic Castine--30 minutes by water or 45 minutes by car--or explore the many inlets and islands of the Bagaduce River. Listen to the call of loons as you enjoy our ever-changing sunsets. A variety of games and puzzles and a collection of books will keep you occupied on a rainy day.
Brooksville, with a total area of 33.8 square miles and 53 miles of coastline is home to Holbrook Island Sanctuary, a pristine nature preserve, and the Good Life Center, the last homestead of Helen and Scott Nearing (authors of Living the Good Life). Pastoral, rolling hills and scenic blueberry barrens are plentiful throughout the area. There is a Farmer's Market every Tuesday morning in Buck's Harbor during the summer months.
Acadia National Park, with a road to the top of the highest mountain on the on the eastern coast as well as hundreds of scenic hiking trails, is just over one hour away by car. Don't miss visiting the Wooden Boat School in nearby Brooklin; Haystack school of crafts on Deer Isle; and Kneisel Hall, famed for world-class chamber music, in nearby Blue Hill,
This fully renovated two-story camp on the edge of the water maintains its rustic atmosphere. New in 2015 is a small roof over the entryway (in case of rain). From there, you step into the "mudroom" where there is a coat closet and behind another door, a stacked washer/dryer.
Step through the glass french doors to the living room where you will find HARDWOOD OAK FLOORS, a BUILT-IN HEARTH, and a SOAPSTONE WOOD STOVE with a CATALYTIC COMBUSTOR--BURNS LIKE A FURNACE, BUT IS AS LOVELY AND GRACEFUL AS A WORK OF ART. The living room is furnished with a recliner and a full-size sofa as well as a smaller cushioned chair and a coffee table. A large sliding glass door in the living room opens to a fully-screened porch. Cushioned seats and coffee table grace the porch as well as a folding chaise/recliner.
The kitchen is fully supplied with dishes, pots and pans, mixing bowls, and includes a lobster pot, drip coffee pot, coffee bean grinder, tea kettle, toaster, blender, electric mixer, microwave oven. An efficiency-sized gas range allows for more countertop space.
Bathroom has large mirrors over the sink. There is a shower with adjustable shower head, and the linen cabinets are fully stocked with towels and washcloths.
As you walk up the stairs (with carpeted runners), you will come to a landing with large windows to the southeast and southwest. The upstairs has a cathedral ceiling with a ceiling fan and track lighting that can be dimmed for a tranquil ambiance. There is a large, high triangle window in the main upstairs facing southeast to let in plenty of early morning light.
The main room upstairs is partitioned into a sitting area with a pull-out sleep sofa and an "office/playroom" with an oak rolltop desk and shelf with games/toys. Bedrooms are cozy with Skylight windows in the lower part of gambrel roof, giving excellent water views.
The boat house outside has life jackets and paddles for the kayaks as well as a long, knotted rope to use to ease the kayaks up and down the slide (next to the stairway to the water). There is a gas grill with two gas tanks, and a backup charcoal grill. A portable wooden ramp is there to help move the grill in and out of the boat house. At the shore, a wooden stairway takes you down to the water's edge; next to the stairway, a slide makes it easier to get the kayaks down and back up again.

A beautiful property - perfect for the relaxing reading retreat we planned for my mom’s birthday. Host lives near the property so communication was easy
I cannot say enough good things about this rental, the property owner, or the location. The owner was very responsive to any needs we had. The location was PERFECT, not just for access to the water, but also for access to local restaurants and. Would happily stay here again in a heartbeat.
The cottage is just as advertised, and in a wonderful location.
The owners are also great, and communication and check-in were easy.
We had some great meals at Buck's nearby, and Cry Babies in Stonington.
We highly recommend, but only if you're looking for a great stay in a peaceful, beautiful location.
Driftwood is a wonderful place to stay. It is impeccably clean, peaceful, and spacious.
We were there for almost a week, it was great to just hang out ; as well, we never ran out of interesting things to explore in the Blue Hill area and into nearby Deer Island.
Driftwood Cottage was the ideal lodging for our latest vacation trip to coastal Maine. A gorgeous, quiet location near Castine, Blue Hill, Deer Isle, and Acadia National Park and a charming, cozy accommodation for two. Our host Jane had fully prepared the cottage for our two-week stay and responded promptly to our few queries. It was a lovely place and time. We look forward to our next visit.
My wife and I stayed for 3 days this summer and enjoyed every part of the experience. The house is beautiful, with water views and peaceful trees surrounding the property. We took the kayaks out and stopped for dinner in Castine. Also loved dropping by Tinder Hearth just nearby - magical spot. Hope to come again!
I've been going to Driftwood Cottage every summer for the past 5yrs, and it never gets old. It's the perfect getaway in a great location. Jane is fantastic to deal with, I feel very comfortable interacting with her on whatever may be needed. The screened-in porch is one of my favorite places to be! Thank you, Jane, for keeping this place so special!
The cottage was clean, airy and was well maintained. The location was perfect and day trips to preserves & trails were easy to get to.
The host was easy to reach and very pleasant to deal with no matter the question. It was tranquil and so enjoyable that we are seriously considering visiting Driftwood again.
Cozy cabin. Well equipped. Nice screened porch overlooking water. I needed a fire several nights and there is a good wood stove and plenty of firewood and kindling. Tides are a challenge at any shore property on the peninsula and you need to watch the tide tables and plan accordingly. Close to Tinder Hearth bakery.
The house was perfect. It was a nice quiet spot and considering how secluded it was not that far from everything. The screened in porch was perfect. It was our morning coffee and evening relaxing spot. We were not brave enough to venture into the water. The rocks were a bit slippery but the view was beautiful. A definite go to when we go to Maine again. Thanks Jane.
Great location, no t.v., just peace and quiet. Lots of birds. The tide is extremely drastic, at least 100 feet from tide to tide. Acadia National Park is a good hour but the drive is scenic. In the summer be prepared for the crowds. Drive back is slow. Highly recommend Young’s Pound Lobster. Thank you Jane for opening up your lovely cottage. Maine is beautiful!
My husband and I were looking for a private yet accessible location to spend our Maine getaway with our son and his wife. This cottage offered the perfect blend of private relaxation on an idyllic, scenic cove where we could watch the tides rise and fall from the water facing porch. It was perfectly located just a hour's drive to Acadia and Camden, the other direction, where we could explore the authentic Maine coastal experience. Better yet, we were a few minutes from Deer Isle and the Brooksville peninsula, where we discovered as many unexpected treasures as found in the larger, more touristy places (if you stay here, don't forget to seek out Caterpillar Hill). This property provided a perfect upstairs arrangement of bedrooms, loft and private desk/study area (perfect for my son who needed to work late into the evenings on his doctorate obligations) while my husband and I enjoyed the downstairs porch and living room areas. With the woods on one side and a field of golden rod on the other, the cabin provided a great place for viewing deer, a pileated woodpecker, loons, 18 wild turkeys and other birds. The calm water of the cove was a great place to kayak. The kitchen has everything you'd need. We were a little disappointed that the evenings weren't cool enough to enjoy the wood burning stove. Instead, we threw open the windows and enjoyed the night air and sounds. Star gazing was great. The loft also has a great library selection if you enjoy cozying up with a good book.
My fiancé (now husband) and I stayed here for the nights leading up to our wedding and the night of our wedding. We used the space to get ready for the wedding and it was overall perfect for what we needed. Relaxing, clean, stunning location. It was a safe heaven away from "Wedding HQ" nearby, and so close to Tinder Hearth. Only issue was with the host on our checkout day. We checked out an hour late - which was my fault (I thought checkout was 11a, but its 10a, and I didn't realize until 10:30, at which point I immediately texted the host letting her know and apologizing - and we had quite a lot of dishes and tidying to do after the wedding party getting ready) but she initially handled the situation very poorly and with little kindness considering it was the morning after our wedding. When she approached my husband with borderline hostility, I ran upstairs crying. My husband heard, and kindly asked her to stop and just let us finish up and checkout, at which point she did apologize and offer us extra time. It all worked out in the end but my husband and I do wish we could have been greeted with the same grace and humility we extended her, on the morning after our wedding. I spent the rest of the morning crying. That being said, we do hope to come back someday, because we said our private vows to each other on the beach and it was a really beautiful moment and location. This place will forever be special to us, despite the shadow cast by our negative interaction.
The house was perfect for us. It had everything we needed, was very clean and had an amazing location. The inclusion of the kayaks was also a big plus.
My 18-year-old son and I spent a wonderful, relaxing week at Driftwood Cottage. This home is well appointed, with really everything we needed from cooking utensils to kayaks. It was so quiet there and an excellent lauching point for all our Coastal Maine adventures. Our host was very welcoming and helpful. We highly recommend Driftwood Cottage!
The setting is beautiful, and so QUIET. A welcome experience after city noise. Our host had truly thought of everything. They know what travelers need. The kayaks were a joy toHave. We went out daily for short excursions. The sunsets on the screened in porch were a delight. Many thanks for the gift of Driftwood Cottage!
