The Eckernförde Bay to the south, the open sea to the east, and the Schlei River to the north and west form its boundaries. Visitors to Schönhagen particularly love the approximately 1,000-meter-long beach, which seamlessly connects to the beach at Kappeln. To the south, the beach borders the cliffs. Following this impressive cliffside, you’ll reach the “Schwansener See” nature reserve in the south, a managed bird sanctuary. Here, between the beach and the dunes, reeds, and sparse forests, lies a habitat for a wide variety of birds, amphibians, and plants. To protect this diverse ecosystem, a walking and biking trail runs through the area at a respectful distance.<br><br>Throughout the year, this small holiday town offers a good programme of events—especially in the summer for families with children. Schönhangen is too small for a “real” promenade.
