Get stuck into living history with a trip to Bothwell Castle, the homestead of Clan Murray and a key fortress in the Scottish fight for independence.

On the banks of the River Clyde, just twenty minutes’ drive from Glasgow town centre, sits Scotland’s largest medieval stone fortress. Bothwell Castle was built by Walter of Moray in the thirteenth century to guard a key crossing point. It changed hands many times during the wars of independence with England, eventually suffering severe damage and falling into disrepair.

The castle was rebuilt by Archibald Douglas – the husband of Joan Moray – in the 1360s, and remained occupied until the eighteenth century, when it was abandoned and eventually fell into ruins. It is now in the care of the Scottish State and is open to explore all year round for a small entry fee.

Whether you are interested in history or just fancy getting out of the city, Bothwell Castle is a great place to visit. Wander round and explore the grounds, maybe stopping for a picnic while enjoying the view across the river. Look into the prisoners’ tower and imagine the misery of the inmates, the starkness of their confinement contrasting sharply with the glory of the raised fourteenth-century Great Hall. Along with the Chapel, this is a later edition built by Archibald the Grim in the fourteenth century.

The castle’s impressive circular tower – or Donjon – once stood 30 metres tall and 20 metres across. Even in its current state, it is still an imposing sight. The west side of the tower was removed to diminish the castle’s ability to withstand siege and now stands open, giving an impressive panorama across the countryside.

The castle hosts a full calendar of events throughout the year and it’s worth timing your visit to coincide with one. Revel in the pageantry of a medieval joust, test your accuracy with a bow and arrow or relive history as you watch bygone battles being fought before your eyes.

Located between Bothwell and Uddingston, the castle has free parking and is a mere 20-minute drive from Glasgow by car. Alternatively, jump on a bus or train to Uddingston and walk the last few minutes to reach the gates.
