This spacious downtown mansion boasts a private library in the sunroom, dedicated billiard room with multiple TVs, loaded game room in basement, and a hidden vintage speakeasy. If that's not enough, enjoy the massive backyard off the back deck just beneath the Vulcan statue. The home rests quietly in the heart of Birmingham's Southside district, blocks away from UAB's medical facilities, Dreamland BBQ & Mellow Mushroom. 5-10 minutes from everything.

We are local and always a quick phone call away!

Restaurants, bars, Top Golf and Protective Stadium are all a short car drive from the house and city scooters are available throughout the neighborhood.

Great house in Birmingham

Great urban location near downtown Birmingham. Older home with charm and character and a beautiful updated kitchen. Would definitely stay again in future trips to Birmingham.

I was very proud to have all my family from around the USA and Germany come and stay for daughter’s wedding downtown. Rooms are larger than I imagined, bathrooms were great . We had 9 ladies get ready at the same time . Wonderful memories made at this property.

Great Location!

A group of us got together for a golfing weekend and had an absolute fantastic time. The house was very spacious and everybody had a room they were comfortable in. Would definitely come back! Also, the hosts were very responsive!

Incredible Property, Incredible Hosts!

We can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay at Vulcan's Knee. Our families came from three states to celebrate my daughter's graduation from UAB and this property was perfectly located and worked splendidly for us! The hosts were the absolute best and really went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us!

Great location; cool house

Overall a success. This is a beautiful old historic home with lots of cool features. It was great for our usage - business associates in the Birmingham area for the Porsche Driving Experience. I would say it would be great for families and kids too. The rental process was great and convenient.

The house is massive and the bathrooms were renovated. The only thing I’d change is adding locks to the bedroom doors. Would stay here again if I ever need a 6 bedroom house in Birmingham, Alabama.

Perfect Thanksgiving Getaway

My family and I had an amazing Thanksgiving stay at Vulcan's Knee! The house was perfect for our family of eight, with plenty of space for our 1-1/2 yr old to run around. We enjoyed the beautiful views and everything to do right in the VRBO. The location was also perfect, close to all the shopping and restaurants we wanted to visit. Here are some of the things we loved about our stay: The house was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well-stocked with everything we needed. The views from the living room and backyard were terrific. The location was perfect, close to everything. The host was very friendly and helpful. We would definitely recommend Vulcan's Knee to anyone looking for a perfect Thanksgiving getaway. We can't wait to come back again!

Really Neat over 100 year old Mansion in Five Points

Thank you for allowing us to rent your home for a family wedding in Birmingham. The location was perfect to get everywhere and so close to The Club and The Vulcan. We loved the tall ceilings, beautiful architecture and details in this older home. The speakeasy was cool, and home has lots of space for all the family. Lots of little conversation spots, and the teens loved the pool table and games in the basement. Such a fun time! Thank you!

Perfect place for a golf trip

We came to play golf and relax. Vulcan's Knee is big, unique, clean, eclectic, fun and perfectly located for great food within walking distance (Dreamland BBQ)! We enjoyed everything about the house. Plenty of seating for watching TV, having coffee or eating a meal. After 3 days we still found ourselves exploring this massive home. I'd recommend this 6-bedroom, perfectly located, mansion to anyone coming to Birmingham for pleasure. Finally, we appreciate the communication with the property manager - they were quick to respond and accommodating. We'll be back!.

Plenty of room.

We gathered for a family get together after Christmas. Wonderful facility although the oven was dirty and smoked up the house on pre- heat. We turned it off and cleaned it so we could heat up dinner. And there were no kitchen towels or wash rags or hot pads for the oven. My daughter lives close so she brought what we needed. Otherwise it was just perfect for our family!!!

Pros and Cons

Pros: location, charming historic structure, uniqueness of layout of home, window views, original hardwoods and structure, close to police station, lots of meal choices, quiet neighbors and larger back yard area. Cons: older home so drafty/insulation issues as expected, living room couch, dusty, DIY remodel in areas/some areas need repair, no hot showers/baths - water temp needed increased, refrigerator did not keep a cold temp for items and property needs better security such as deadbolts/locking doors to feel more ease for guests. All in all, it was a positive experience and I would recommend the property.

Great experience in Birmingham

My team & I recently stayed at a VRBO rental property in Birmingham, Alabama and had a fantastic experience. The property was located in a convenient and safe neighborhood, making it easy to explore the city without any concerns. Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and overall condition of the rental. The property was well-maintained and had all the amenities necessary for a comfortable stay. The kitchen was fully equipped with modern appliances and cookware, perfect for preparing meals during my stay. The bedrooms were spacious and provided a cozy retreat at the end of a long day. The highlight of the VRBO rental was undoubtedly the host's attention to detail. They had clearly put a lot of thought and effort into ensuring a pleasant stay for their guests. From the complimentary toiletries to the provided coffee and snacks, every little touch added to the overall comfort and convenience of the experience. Additionally, communication with the host was excellent. They were quick to respond to any questions or concerns and made the check-in process seamless. Their warm and friendly nature made me feel welcome and valued as a guest. The location of the rental was ideal for exploring Birmingham. It was centrally located and within walking distance or a short drive to various attractions, restaurants, and shops. Whether I wanted to explore the vibrant downtown or visit nearby parks and museums, everything was conveniently accessible.

What more could a large group need?

We were a group of 20 (chaperones/students). We had an amazing week in Vulcan's Knee. The room allows for close contact with all, but plenty of room when folks need a bit of room. Beds slept well and the neighborhood is VERY quiet even though it is 1 block from the 5 points entertainment district. Parking is ample (some in driveway, plenty available on street - that is very low traffic street). Plenty of room to lounge and play and lots and lots to do! Several TVs throughout the house, but the students loved the speak-easy, library, billards, and playing cards the most! PLENTY of towels and linens! and a washer and dryer. Home supplied paper products, laundry detg. dish soap, hand soap, cleaner, etc...basically, bring your group or family, food (HUGE pantry, nice grill), and you are set. If you are indeed a large group, bring a few larger cooking pots/sheet pans. Gas stove kept up with cooking 3 meals and a snack a day and the Kitchen had plenty of dishes and silverware. Fridge is a bit small for large groups, so plan to shop every other day for cold items. Yard is mostly enclosed, but is on a slope...fine for elementary and older children...for younger children, there would be plenty of room to play in the house, porch, and there are parks nearby. Really, the best possible place we could have found! We hope to return again!

Convenience and wonderful for large groups

We stayed her with multiple family couples for a wedding venue in town . The house had most everything we needed. If it didn’t , it does now. :) We loved the spacious kitchen where we all gathered and greeted each other each morning . We did a lot of pre wedding prepping for a rehearsal dinner . Loved the large pantry ! All but one bedroom are upstairs . (FYI -If you have elderly or handicapped.) The bathroom is a tub shower combo though .There is one queen on the main entry level. . Lots of entertainment for kids 9 and up . Loved the speakeasy! Everyone said their bed was very comfortable . Big plus !! I would suggest blackout blinds in all bedrooms, epically those receiving morning sun , but we put our early risers in those rooms. Parking for three cars in driveway , but room on the street and in an office bldg. next door that is closed on weekends. We would come back for sure ! This home would be great for hosting a group of friends for celebrating birthdays, holidays, weddings, sporting events or even a great murder mystery weekend, who did it weekend in the old house built in 1903. This house has lots of potential They are achieving to provide you a wonderful time ! . You can see that the owners are working to restore it. We loved it ! The famous Jim and Nicks BBQ was just a short drive away. Loved seeing the lit Vulcan statue and a beautiful full moon from the seating I. The living room.! Thank you Delaine ! The Thornton Family -

House had what we needed--a large kitchen, tables for work space, and the right number of beds/baths. Had we not been in Birmingham for work, we could have enjoyed the front porch and game room more. I would stay here again.
