We booked a VRBO property, only to be notified shortly before our stay that the original rental was unavailable due to maintenance issues. The host moved us to what was described as a similar property, but this transfer was handled outside of VRBO without our knowledge or consent.Upon arrival, the condition of the replacement property was unacceptable. There was a strong moldy, musty odor throughout the home. The floors and carpets were visibly dirty, the bathroom bath mat was filthy, and there was what appeared to be old, smushed food left in the refrigerator. We also found crusty residue on blankets and the couch, which made us question the overall cleanliness and sanitation of the property.What made the experience even more frustrating was the lack of communication from the host. We attempted multiple times to address these concerns, but were told there was an emergency and that the host would be unavailable for the weekend. As of this review, we still have not received a response. Because the reservation was moved outside of the VRBO platform, VRBO’s ability to assist has been extremely limited.Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. Cleanliness, communication, and transparency are basic expectations when booking a vacation rental, and unfortunately this stay fell far short in all three areas.
