Bastion of Parsano

Take a walk through the centuries at this ancient fortification with picturesque views over the city.

The Bastion of Parsano forms part of the Ancient Walls of Sorrento, dating back to the 4th century BC. The walls defined the limits of the city and protected its citizens from invasion, with the bastion itself forming a prominent lookout over the surrounding countryside. The solidly built structure has stood the test of time and is now an important historic site, offering a window into the ancient past. First the Greeks and then the Romans settled here, the latter building their new town over the original Greek street plan, leaving a fascinating archaeological legacy. During the 16th century the bastion played a vital part in repelling an invasion by the Saracens. The bastion has been extensively renovated in recent years and is now a popular visitor attraction. Peer down through the metal grate near the entrance to see some of the surviving Greek and Roman remains, which were excavated in 1921. Then follow the walkway along the walls, pausing to marvel at the sturdy construction of tough tufa limestone that made this such an impregnable fortress. The natural property of the tufa rocks encourages the growth of ferns and other rare plants, softening the rugged walls with a delicate covering of vegetation. The panoramic views are testament to the bastion’s strategic position. During the day you can see across much of the city from the walkway, while at night the illuminated archways, staircases and walls of the ancient fortification itself lend a touch of magic to the experience. The entrance of the Bastion of Parsano is on Via Sersale, off Corso Italia, a short walk from Piazza Tasso, the city’s main square. The bastion is open in the late mornings and evenings and admission is free. Pick up a free leaflet from one of the attendants to learn more about the history of this fascinating structure and the part it has played in safeguarding the citizens of Sorrento through the centuries.
