Admire its exquisite architecture, peer from the towers over the city or just soak up the atmosphere of Basel’s most important house of worship.

Set in a commanding position beside the Rhine River, Basler Muenster (Basel Cathedral), is one of Basel’s most famous landmarks. Look out over the city and river from the church’s towers while its medieval gargoyles look down on you.

With its distinctive red sandstone masonry, colorful roof tiles and twin towers, this church makes for an elegant and beautiful addition to Basel’s historic cityscape. The church is said to portray both Romanesque and Gothic styles of architecture.

Stand in front Basler Muenster and gaze up at the architecture that makes this church so famous. With construction first beginning in 1019 and with additions and rebuilding being carried out all the way through to 1500, there is a huge amount of history within its walls.

Notice the two towers that are vital features to the church's façade. The Georgsturm and Martinsturm, named after St. George and St. Martin, measure over 200 feet (60 meters) in height. Spot the fascinating carvings of each saint on the walls of the towers.

Enter the church to take in its vast interior. Elegant but austere, the graceful arches and intricate stained-glass windows beckon to be admired. Head down into the crypts for a more somber experience below ground level or take in the grand vistas by climbing to the top of the towers.

Head outside and wander around to take in some other nice aspects of the church. Sitting on the vibrant and picturesque Münsterplatz, the square is a good place to meet the locals who often gather here for religious or other events. Walk around the church to reach the riverside terrace called Pfalz and enjoy the stunning views across the river.

The Basler Muenster is an active church so it is open daily and entry is free. It is recommended to check the church’s calendar ahead of your visit to avoid interfering with any services or special events. Entry to the crypts and towers are a little more restrictive and fees may apply, depending on when you visit. The church is very centrally located and is best reached on foot through the narrow streets of the old city. Bus and tram options are good for longer distances.
