Witness the majestic neo-Gothicspectacle of the Basilica of the National Vow (Basílica del Sagrado Voto Nacional). This grand building bears a striking resemblance to the famous Notre-DameCathedral in Paris and stands as the largest basilica in the Americas. Admirethe intricate architecture and then spend a quiet moment exploring its sanctuaryand chapels.

Funding for the basilica, which wascompleted in 1909, was drawn heavily from the donations of worshippers. Inexchange for their contributions, the names of the donators were engraved intoits building stones.

Perched on a steep hill in the northeastsector of the historic district, the distinct outline of the basilica can beseen from throughout the city. As you approach, look out for the definition ofthe exterior’s complex neo-Gothic detailing. Within these decorations, spotcarved grotesques of native Ecuadorian animals, including armadillos, iguanas,dolphins and Galapagos tortoises.

Venture into the church’s 30-metre(98-foot) sanctuary and take in the vast, peaceful space. The atmosphere ischaracterised by a red and gold interior, illuminated by warm hues emanatingfrom stained-glass windows. Look out for images within the windows depictingapostles and evangelists.

After experiencing the beauty within the basilica, walk to the entry to its two frontal towers. Climb these 115-metre (377-foot)towers via stone staircases. Take a moment to admire the view from an internalbalcony above the basilica sanctuary before continuing up to the south-facing lookouts. Whether admiring the full panorama, or using a telescopeto magnify landmarks like the Virgin monument on El Panecillo, the view ofQuito from here is breathtaking. For an even taller lookout, climb up the ironrun to the tower peaks.

Find the Basílica del Sagrado VotoNacional in Quito’s historic Old Town, in the Santa Prisca neighbourhood. Get thereby trolleybus or walk from nearby landmarks. The basilica is open daily.
