Explore 22 floors in this incredible piece of architecture inspired by Dante’s poem Divine Comedy and admire panoramic views from the rooftop lighthouse.

One of Buenos Aires’ most unusual and eye-catching buildings, Palacio Barolo features art nouveau, gothic and art deco elements. It was inspired by Dante Alighieri’s poem Divine Comedy. Wander through some of the building’s 22 floors to see the opulent décor, such as dragon light-fittings, gilt domes and moulded ceilings. Don’t miss the views over Buenos Aires from the lighthouse on top of the palace.

The palace was named after the Italian-born entrepreneur, Luis Barolo who commissioned the architect Mario Palanti. When the 100-metre (328-foot) tall building was completed in 1923, it was the tallest building in South America. Now it is used mostly as offices, but many floors are open to the public as part of a guided tour. Take a tour to get a great insight into the building’s symbolism and architecture.

Start your Palacio Barolo experience from across the street, where you’ll get a sense of the building’s scale. From a distance you can appreciate the fusion of architectural styles. Inside you’ll find references to Dante in the details of the décor, including hellfire floor patterns and gargoyles in the lobby.

Join a 45-minute guided tour to travel up through the levels representing hell and purgatory to “heaven”, all elements of Dante’s poem. Peer over atriums, which provide views to the top and bottom of the building. In “heaven” you’ll find the beautiful Hindu-style cupola and rooftop lighthouse. Photograph the city from small outdoor balconies. With stunning views over Congreso Nacional and the Casa Rosada, this level is not to be missed.

Tours run on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the day. Take an evening tour from Wednesday to Saturday to enjoy a glass of wine as you watch the city light up. Tour times and prices are available on the building’s official website.

The Palacio Barolo is located on the Avenida de Mayo. It’s within easy walking distance of the city centre. You can also catch the metro and public buses.

If you’re short on time, you can explore the lobby for free. Tour tickets can be bought from the booth located near the entrance.
