Meddybemps Lake House with. Sandy Beach Cool Summer Temps, highs in the 70s.
9 private acres on Meddybemps Lake, Alexander, Maine backed by 300+ acres of conservation land. Property has its own sandy beach extending far into the lake (one of few natural freshwater beaches in Maine). Year round residence built in 2003 has right to use adjacent 300+ acres of conservation land private to neighborhood. Neighborhood is a private community that is family friendly. Kayaks equipped for four paddlers (one double and two singles). One person Old Town Canoe for the fisherman. Home has two upstairs bedrooms one with a double bed and one with a double bed and a single bed with shared full bath. Downstairs has a bedroom with a kingsize bed and a second bathroom. Eat-in screened sunporch. Kitchen table with four chairs and a bench seat. Handicapped friendly (first floor bedroom and bathroom, lever door handles, wheelchair wide doorways and ramp access to house, second floor staircase dual railings to help with balance).
Fall foliage and winter cross country skiing and ice fishing.
Jean, one of the owners, grew up spending vacations on the lake. A favorite spot of hers, and her father and his brothers before her was a remote sandy beach you could only access by boat. When the property came up for sale many years later, she and her husband Rob bought it. Working with a local conservation group, the character of the land has been preserved. 35 homes are spread out over the 1.5 mile stretch of the lake in a private community. Now the beach is a short walk away - and private to Jean and Rob's property. It's a very quiet spot, and remains, to many, the loveliest spot on the lake.
Great swimming and boating. Small gas grill and picnic table, beach chairs on beach. Kayaks are provided or bring your own boat and beach it on the white sand. There is a boat launch private to the community. Eat-in heated sunporch. Grocery stores, golf, hospital, restaurants 10 minutes away. Fish for bass, landlocked salmon, or white perch. Ice cream stand and restaurant 2 miles away. Championship golf course at world famous Algonquin Resort in St. Andrews, NB, CA, 45 minutes away, is open to the public. 15 minutes to Calais Golf Course. Located in the St. Croix River Valley, there are numerous river and lake trips minutes away. Two border crossings into New Brunswick Canada are 15 minutes away. Campobello Island is a one hour trip. Cutler to buy lobsters off the dock is 45 minutes away.

My husband, I and our dogs spent a week. Wish the weather had been better. Everything we needed was provided. Very private. Our dogs didn’t want to leave. Had dinner at nearby Nook & Cranny every night. Excellent food, lots of choices. Irving had a great breakfast restaurant. Everything is within 10 minutes.
We needed a place to collapse and reset! This was perfect! Secluded and private with a beautiful sandy beach overlooking the lake. Not having to transport our own kayaks was a great plus; kayaks in good shape.
The light over the main dining table was not working, as well as a few electric outlets -- we bought a lantern at Walmart in Calais and did just fine. Got a few really cold showers -- finally figured out one of us needed to shower in the am and the other in the pm to get 2 hot showers.
Kitchen was pretty well stocked, super-easy check-in, internet access was good, house layout was nice. Overall a very nice place to get away from it all!!
I cannot say enough amazing things about this place! The sandy beach was spectacular with my 3 and 5 year olds and the shallow lasts about 60 feet into the lake. My kids absolutely loved being in the water and being able to walk out that far. I will say the rental wasn't 100% clean but the owners were very responsive to our notes. My husband would probably rate the cleanliness as a 4 out of 5 whereas I would say 3 but I notice those types of things. There were so many activities to do close by, Moosehorn for hiking, so many beaches on the coast within 30 minutes. Jeans communication was great! the rental was well stocked with ample supplies. We're already thinking we should go back.
We stayed at this VRBO property in July 2023. Overall, the house was as described and was clean although I would replace the couches as they are terribly uncomfortable. The master bedroom and bathroom were great and we enjoyed dinners on the screened in porch. There were lots of beach towels stocked at the camp. the kitchen has a variety of pots and pans as well as accessories. The beach was private and just an easy 1-2 minute walk down a well worn path. I would recommend this property for younger children as the water was fairly shallow (3 or 4 feet deep) for a good distance. It is a great lake for paddleboarding as there was little boat traffic and we saw an eagle and heron flying around the area. We tried to use the charcoal grill but didn't find charcoal in the local grocers. I would recommend a new gas grill that is large enough to fit with a 3 bedroom camp as the working gas grill was too tiny to work for us. There is no dedicated firepit but we were able to drag an older firepit we found by the garage down to the beach to use. there are a variety of chairs at the beach so everyone can find a place to sit. We stayed downstairs and the weather was hot/humid but it was cool in the camp with the windows open. Just be careful, that there is one window in the master bedroom that is missing a screen. We did have an issue while we were there but the owners were quick to resolve it.
Overall, we enjoyed our time here and the location worked for
Our family had a wonderful time on Meddybumps Lake, this property had everything we were looking for in a vacation!the cleanliness of the lake was so refreshing even the dog enjoyed lounging by the water.Nice private area which was another big plus for us,!!
Lovely house and grounds. Everything we could want was there. Great home base for exploring the Moosehorn wildlife refuge and beyond.

Week in June
The BBQ grill does not work. I did reach out to the owner who did offer to purchase a new one if I went to pick it up but I didn’t feel that was something a renter should have to do. The furniture is well worn and uncomfortable. There were six of us and only seating in the living room for four. The mattresses and pillows in the bedrooms need to be replaced. I would recommend outside furniture for relaxation up by the house.

A Very Peaceful Time
My fiancé, and I along with our two Wheaten Terriers just returned from a very relaxing week on Meddybemp cottage. The cottage was well represented and all the basic supplies needed were there. My dogs enjoyed swimming and loved the freedoms of being able to run around all day without being leashed.
Internet, cell phone service were not very good. The TV did not get any stations, but we rented movies at night from the convenience store down the road. For us it as a nice break from the busy corporate lives we live. I would highly recommend this cottage if you are looking for a place to relax without technology for a week. We feel so relaxed after our week on the lake.
Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to stay at your home
When on our way to get the key info not well communicated to a few ways of communication to get a answer. Than when we arrived all I must say is ITS A MUST TO CLEAN!! We arrived and had to clean immediately Per the owners it should have been done but defiantly was not done. I can understand a little mess if the cleaning lady felt rushed but it looked like it was never cleaned. So unless you don't mind cleaning than this place is for you. I got away so I could relax but to start off this was not acceptable for us. The place is a little outdated and needs new photo and description updates for this rental. I feel over priced for what we got. The 3 kayaks were correct as described but the row boat was broke unless you can row with one oar. There is not hammock and the fire pit we didn't use since only had 2 legs and one was missing and was held up by some rig job. The lake is beautiful and the neighbors are all very nice and friendly with us. The house had mold in shower and sink was slow to drain and floor mats had to be cleaned as well. Carpets are all stained up and sand is all over the floors so you are gonna need to vacuum (which is fixed since bag wasn't connected properly when arrived). If you go to get lobsters they have the pot but none of the required items to open them so you can buy at a local store or bring your own. Pot is also hard to wash in the small kitchen sink so be prepared. The sheets and couch covers all had to be washed since a guests had markers and left over food on them. Another prior guest left a item on the nightstand so I was contacted by the owner and the prior guest since cleaning lady could not find the item but funny part sitting right on night stand so you would assume she would see when dusted or made bed. Prior guest very polite and understood I couldn't answer all the time since wifi is not good at all. Thought is was just our plan since we were near Canada boarder but prior guest confirmed as well wifi is barely there. I would never go back to this property but would go back to Alexander and to Calais since we made a few friends out there. I will say if you go take photos as soon as you arrive and when you leave you will need the proof. I have over 75 photos and using them.

Messy hemps camp
We loved the lake front especially our dog. Everything was fine and comfortable. The only downside was the Wi-Fi very frustrating at night watching tv. They stated that next year a new system will be available
I never review, but the mrs was adamant about this one. Loved it. Good fishing for small mouth, they are real fighters, super fun to fish for. The sand bottom was great for swimming. You can walk out past your waist (if you are 6’) and still be on sand. We bought new hardware for the row boat so it is good togo. We used a trolling motor with it which worked great.
This is the REAL Maine. Not a tourist town. This is the place togo for peace and quiet. Little river lobster (cutler) is the place to get live lobster right off the dock about 45-60 min drive (bring cash). There are pots for cooking them, but we could not find utensils for them i.e. crackers/picks ect. Karen’s had good breakfast (in calais) and nook and cranny was good for dinner. Davis beach is NOT for the public, it is on a navy base, so goto roque bluffs instead if you want to hit the beach (it is small but at least is a beach). Bring your passports if you want to go to Canada they have less restrictions on lobster so you can buy bigger lobster (if you need them that big).
The sun porch was great for meals. Bring bug spray if you will be by the water for the evening, they are relentless. If you go out in the water they don’t bother you. Doggo loved everything, especially trying to eat the fish we caught! Thank you Jean and Rob.
We had a wonderful time in Alexander Maine. We enjoyed the private beach with easy access from the home for my son’s wheelchair. Perfect lake for kayaking, fishing amd swimming!
We very much enjoyed our two week stay Lake Meddybemp. The lake is gorgeous (and huge) and the setting is lovely. We swam, paddled, fished and explored the nearby Moosehorn Refuge and towns.. The house is spacious, very comfortable and quite private. On a lake that big, we could have used a boat with a motor. It also seemed that the pandemic and border closure with Canada has hurt the area, but if you want a lovely, quiet vacation, this is a great choce. The hosts were very responsive.
The house and the amenities were perfect for our family visit. The location on the lake was very picturesque and the shallow sandy entry on the lake was great for kids, swimming, and kayaking.
Kids loved the beach. Plenty of good food selections nearby - though eat early! Really enjoyed exploring Moosehorn and logging roads. We even saw two moose!
We experienced both heat and cold weather in Alexander. The house is great but does at least need ceiling fans. Was very warm in 90 degree heat with high humidity. That would be our only complaint
The hosts were gracious and helpful.
The lake was beautiful. Truly a wonderful get away.
The only issue was the cleanliness of the home. We spent about five hours cleaning our first night. But other than that it was great.
Our family went for week vacation in August 2020. We enjoyed eating every meal on the screened dinning room. We enjoy the beach at some point everyday. This home is also a perfect location for day trips. We visited Eastport, Lubec and the Quoddy light house. Hiked in the Moosehorn National preserve. The last day there we kayak around to the left from the beach which leads to a smaller cove. If you keep going there is a small stream that heads into the marsh. It is absolutely beautiful, the flowers and lily pads. The stream is so shallow that only kayaks can go in and it is amazing to float along barely paddling. I wish I had known this was there cause I would have explored further.
