There’s no need to get wet to see what lies beneath the ocean. Visitors can see a host of sea life from the comfort of dry land at this fascinating aquarium.

The AQWA - Aquarium of Western Australia is home to thousands of sea creatures, with a particular emphasis on the life that inhabits the coastal area of Western Australia. The forty exhibits are dedicated to over 4,000 different aquatic species. Shipwreck Coast is a huge mini-ecosystem containing nearly three million litres of water, making it one of Australia’s biggest.Walk through the transparent tunnel that runs right through the heart of the aquarium and delight in the dozens of creatures of all varieties, shapes and sizes swimming right next to you and overhead. It’s a pretty surreal experience! There are sharks that can grow up to a staggering 4 metres in length, enormous rays, and weighty loggerhead turtles. Other creatures living here include sea anemones and seahorses. The underwater Reefwalker adventure is an amazing opportunity to take a dip and view the huge array of coral native to Perth, considered on a par with that of the famous Great Barrier Reef. If you don’t fancy getting wet, you can still enjoy great views of the reef through the glass panels. There are also diving and snorkelling opportunities within the aquarium. A guide will take care of you as you dive into the water and get up close to reef sharks. The Perth Coast exhibit is dedicated to sea life native to that area, particularly jellyfish. The Tropical Lagoon habitat contains some incredibly exotic looking fish and even some crocodiles. If the crocs aren’t dangerous enough, enter the Danger Zone if you dare! This is home to some of Australia’s most dangerous and lethal sea creatures. There are also some safer specimens in this exhibit, which can be handled in the touching pools. The AQWA is located next to Hillarys Boat Harbour, about 22 kilometres north of central Perth. It opens every day of the year, except during major public holidays.
