Opened exactly 200 years after America's official independence was declared, the African American Museum Philadelphia (AAMP) provides a fascinating overview of African American life, history and culture from the 16th century up to the present day. From sport to architecture, politics to entertainment, the museum attempts to cover every aspect imaginable with one of the broadest collections of African American artefacts in the entire country.The best way to start your visit is by getting your bearings at the interactive pictorial timeline. The collection begins with artefacts from the early days of African American culture such as ceremonial tools and weapons, and moves forwards in time through art, film and photography to tell the population's tales of struggle and triumph. The wide-ranging imagery comes in large part from a local photo-journalist who donated his collection of photographs of 20th-century African American life and notable figures to the museum.Scattered around the museum are a number of full-screen audiovisual presentations.
