Westin Maui- beautiful property, great location, expensive and crowded
In August 2010, we stayed at the Westin Maui with our boys 11 and 13, in an "ocean front" room that did look toward the ocean, but mostly was a view of the ugly roof of the pavilion. Our room was nice with comfy beds and spa showers. It is located on Kaanapali beach with beautiful pools, gardens, next to the walking trail that leads to other hotels, black rock, restaurants and Whalers shopping village was its biggest asset. Great Mai Tais at the pool bar too! Our boys enjoyed the pools, but there were simply not enough beach chairs to accommodate all the guests. And even if you did find a chair, they were all jammed together. Not my idea of a relaxing day. But the ocean was there and fun to play in, and every morning we would walk to black rock by the Sheridan and go snorkeling. We ate at two of the Westins restaurants, the Tropica and the Ono. Both were very overpriced and not very good. We enjoyed eating at the Hula Grill, which was just a quick walk away Great food, reasonably priced that support local vegetable farmers and ranchers. Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Westin, but will not return. It was very overpriced even with the Expedia discount, too many extra fees, and my boys were too old to really enjoy the pools, and preferred the ocean, and we adults, probably too old to enjoy all the people and noise. This property would better suit families with elementary/ preschool aged children or young adults, and couples looking to have a fun social experience.
